Dog Agility Training is Important When Preparing a Show Dog

Dog agility, as the name suggests, is a dog sport wherein the agility and the command-following instincts of the dog are tested. The sport’s popularity has grown any folds and the prices for the champion dogs are also increasing as time is progressing. From classic competition of the international cadre to local sport cups, there are a lot of hues to the whole concept of dog agility.

The dog is supposed to performs many feats and circuits while covering various obstacles. The dog usually fights the competition without the leash and the master is not at all allowed to touch the dog or the obstacles. Only a few voice and body signals are permitted, and therefore, dog agility training is one of the most difficult types of training that one can impart to his dog.

During most of the agility competitions, there is a set of obstacles which are chosen by the judge. These obstacles need to be covered by the participating dogs in a particular order of occurrence, according to the numbers marked on them. These obstacles are arranged in a 30m by 30m area, usually.

The dog agility training is not difficult, but might require patience and time on the part of the master as well as the dog. The obstacles are designed in a way so that the dogs can easily run them through instinctively. A dog would instinctively want to cross the tunnel to meet its master on the other side, and find it a fun activity to do because there is some sort of a reward associated with it at the end. See-saw completion, on the other hand is an awkward obstacle for your dog because of two reasons, firstly, the dogs are vary of the random movements of the see-saw bridge, and secondly, it is really difficult for dogs to maintain their speed while doing the see-saw.

After successfully training your dog for agility sports, there might be certain trials and competitions that you would have to pass before you and your dog can participate in the main events. These trails might be hosted by dog sports clubs or by breed clubs. Breed clubs aim at highlighting the good characteristics of the breed they embrace and might sponsor you and your dog at the main competition as well. Finally, you would need to assess the course for the main competition and prepare your dog and yourself accordingly in order to clinch the title of being the champion.
