Does Saw Palmetto Prevent Hair Loss?

Currently there is a great deal of research on the supplement saw palmetto. Many people have used it for maintaining good prostate health. Many people started reporting a difference in hair growth and the prevention of hair loss after taking saw palmetto.

The scientific name for saw palmetto is Serenoa repens and is found the United States. Native American Indians took saw palmetto for urinary health and so do many men today. The effects of saw palmetto on enlarged prostate and prostate cancer are well known. The question is does saw palmetto prevent hair loss?

The suspected method in which saw palmetto may prevent hair loss has to do with the blockage of the damaging affects of testosterone. Males and females produce testosterone and this hormone is well associated with hair loss and baldness in men. Many of the prescription drugs and over the counter medications that help prevent hair loss do so by fighting the affects of testosterone. Of course saw palmetto supplements are much less expensive than the prescription drugs.

Many hair products like shampoo, conditioner and styling gels contain saw palmetto so buying these products might help your hair loss problems. You might want to combine taking a supplement with using the hair care products.

Hopefully the studies on saw palmetto will reveal that it does prevent hair loss. There might be more to this ancient supplement then we thought.
