Does Barley Straw Really Work?

The biggest challenge for anyone with a small water garden is how do you to keep the water pure. Part of the wonderment that is a water pond is in how the plants and fish interact with each other. If the pond is clear and clean, its easy to view the gold fish. However, the biggest advantage is certainly for your wallet. Cleaner water means a healthier pond.
If you have got a pond, like me, you will commonly wonder how you can keep the water clearer and cleaner. Yes, you can keep fishing the leaves, and other waste out but there has got to be a solution that can help, hasn't there? Luckily, there is! I have hit upon the answer to all of my prayers. It works, and I don't have to make much effort at all. Now my pond is cleaner and clearer than ever before. I can see down to the bottom, and my fish are obviously much happier. As well as that, I have found that newts and other creatures have decided to make my pond their home. So, what is my secret? Well, it is barley straw. Yes, barley straw.

You very likely haven't even heard of barley straw. Well, I hadn't either, until a friend of mine was around the other week, when we were having a barbecue, and he looked at the pond. "That is lovely, but I bet you wish that it was a little clearer?" He said. I felt a little embarrassed, but I admitted that I didn't have much time to spend on it, but I loved the mental calmness it gave to my garden. "I have a solution that you should try." He said. "It worked wonders for me!"

It turns out that he has been using barley straw for a number of years now. He has no idea how it actually works, but there is something in it that helps clear the water of his pond. All he does is place a bale of the straw near his fountain, or other water feature, and it does the rest!

Well, I was intrigued. I looked into the price of barley straw and realized that it wasn't all that expensive, so I thought I would give it a go. After all, I wanted to have a clean and clear pond, but didn't want to have to spend hours working on it myself. I had to give this a try. After all, it only cost me a few bucks. So, off I went and bought some. Then I place it, just under the small waterfall that I have feeding my pond, secured by a couple of rocks. Then all I could do was wait for a few days to see what happened. I must admit that I was skeptical, but I was also intrigued.

I have to tell you that I couldn't believe my eyes, when I checked on my pond a few days later. It wasn't completely clear, but there was one heck of an improvement. I couldn't believe me eyes. The barley straw had worked! I am sure that there is some scientific explanation as to what is going on, but I don't know it, and I don't really want to. The fact is that barley straw really works for me. All I have to do is place a new bale in the base, near moving water, and let it work its magic. It really is as simple as that.
