Do you have Enough Content to Balance out the Ads on your Site?

Implementing advertisements on your site is an easy task, but doing it the right way is crucial. It is important to keep a right balance between ads and content in order to make the most out of your site.
Advertising is one of the best ways to add an income stream to your website. Ads for your site come in all shapes and sizes, and from lots of different companies if you choose to go with them, but it can sometimes be very easy to put so much effort into the ads on your site that you forget about the fact that content should always come first.

The most crucial point is right at the start of a new website. You will of course want to monetize it and there is nothing wrong with that, but if you find you are spending more time choosing the ads for your site than you are creating fresh content, then you won’t be getting as many visitors as you would like to actually see the ads in the first place.

So you see the best way to get a good response to the ads for your site is to take your eye off them and focus on providing other worthwhile content to draw your visitors in. But is there a good percentage of content to ads that you should be aiming for?

There is no real hard and fast rule here, but it’s fair to say that if you find you have more ads than you do content, you will need to redress the balance a little. The worst reaction you will get to that is a visitor landing on your site and deciding that it is clearly set up for raking in money and nothing else – and they will leave to explore elsewhere instead.

The ads for your site should really be incidental – they should have their place but when it comes to helping your visitors by supplying the information they need you should really concentrate on your content and think of the advertising as a secondary (but still very important) addition to your website.

It’s worth experimenting with the ads for site philosophy to make sure you get the right mix of ads and content in your particular case. Different websites and audiences can tolerate different amounts of promotional efforts, so be sure to note down the results of your experiments to make sure you find the right solution for you.
