Do Children Need a Different Suncream or Sunblock than Adults

We cannot escape the rays of the sun no matter where we live and work. These harsh UV rays can create problems for us and the more exposure we have the more likely we are to develop some kind of skin condition that is related to too much sun. This is why it’s so important to protect our skin with sunscreen and sunblock products. Even the smallest members of the family will benefit from having sunscreen applied daily.

Many people buy one type of all purpose sunscreen and keep it available for everyone in the family. While adults and children can use many of the same sunscreen formulas, there are some types that should not be used on kids. Children are very susceptible to some chemicals, dyes and fragrances that are included in a number of commonly sold products that are applied to the skin. This is why you should always be wary about what you are purchasing and check the label to see what ingredients are listed. The sunscreen products that contain PABA or other harsh chemicals are not even ideal for adults, and should never be used with kids of any age.

Skin care products for sun protection that are made from zinc oxide or titatinium dioxide are safe for all ages to use. These have no harsh chemicals in the formulas and are a great way to guard the skin of both children and adults. These preparations are available in creams, mists, sprays and lotions that are easy to apply. As soon as the skin dries you can’t even tell that these have been used. There is little chance of any skin irritation or allergic reaction when you apply products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and these formulas go to work as soon as they contact the surface of the skin.

While a high SPF is always a good idea it is really necessary for children who should always be covered by a product with an SPF of at least 30. 45-50 is the SPF that is recommended for kids under the age of 6. Adults can use products with SPF ratings as low as 15.

Even though you are applying top sunscreen protection to your exposed body, there are other tips to keep in mind.

• The rays of the sun are powerful and should be avoided between the peak morning hours of 11am and 2pm.

• If you must be outdoors then you should use UV sunhats, sun protective clothing, umbrellas or other shade producing sources.

• Apply sunscreen products to your lips, nose and ears when outside in the sun.

• Reapply a coating of sunscreen after swimming unless you are using a waterproof variety.

• All sunscreens for the body last for a limited amount of time. You should reapply more sunscreen as frequently as you need.

• Just because you are in the ocean or a pool do not think that sunscreen is a waste of time. You need it more than ever in these instances because of the reflection of the rays.
