- Spare parts: Extra spark plug, oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, air filter, etc
- Emergency parts: Fuses, extra belt, coolant hose and radiator cap
- Equipment used in snow and ice like deicer
- Reflectors and flash lights
- Socket set of varying sizes
- Screwdrivers (both flat and Phillips head) of different sizes
- Lug wrench of various shapes and sizes
Here I am going to give you a brief idea on Do It Yourself car repair of some simple problems which you can easily fix yourself.
- Rust Repair: Car rust repair is quite easy. Remove the rust from the car by scrubbing it with wire brush. Then scrub the car paint with 220 grit sandpaper which is enough to remove the paint and the primer. Then with the help of metal grinding wheel, grind the scrubbed parts of the car. Do it slowly as it can harm the car. With this your rust removal work is over. Now clean up the car with the help of a cotton cloth. Cover the areas where you don't need the paint. Now spray the primer and wait for it to dry. Repeat the primer one more time and then after it dries spray paint your car. Let it dry and then repeat 2 - 3 coats over it.
- Scratch Repair: Car scratch repair may need some simple guidance. Start with a car wash. Let your car dry and then examine the scratches properly. After you see the scratches, roll your fingers over it to be sure that it's a scratch not the decolored paint. Then clean that area and try to level the scratch with the help of a fine sandpaper. Clean that part with the help of a cotton cloth. Apply compound over the scratch with the help of a plastic knife. Leave till it becomes hard. Now with the help of sandpaper slowly level it up. Clean the surface and blow away the dust. Now spray primer over it and let it dry. Now end up the procedure with a touch up paint.
- Window Repair: Window repair may have many points to cover as the window may get stuck due to many reasons. You can clean the window with the help of a duster which will remove all the debris and dust. If it is stuck completely then there may be some problem with the fuse. You must check the fuse, if the red strip present in the center is broken then this means you need to change the fuse.
- Cool an Overheated Engine: If your engine is overheated while you are driving your car, park your car in a safe place and turn the heater setting and heater blower at high. Open the hood and leave the engine to cool. Do not open the car radiator cap till the engine cools down as its pressure can cause severe burns. After the engine cools down, check the coolant level. If it is lower than the minimum level line then pour some more coolant in it. If it has sufficient amount of coolant then may be there is some major problem with your car which cannot be fixed by you. In this case get it checked by a mechanic.
