Discover the Truth about Whether or Not Tanning Beds are Safe

I've asked my doctor if tanning beds are safe. His answer was: It's a great question and one that needs serious attention.

If you're on the outside looking in, a tanning bed is built to be safe, but are basically accidents waiting to happen.

Two of the biggest issues revolve around the two variations of radiation.

It may be hard to believe, but X-rays are the first issues. They are emitted at the ends of both bulbs. In order to combat the situation, you just need a piece of lead tape wrapped around the last inch of the bulb. In fact, this basically occurs in all fluorescent bulbs.

Ever heard a humming noise when you're tanning? Well this is the EMF being emitted by the magnetic ballast. It's the second form of radiation that is present.

Without going into the medical detail, the further you are away from the ballast the better. Unfortunately, when you're in a tanning bed you're just inches away.

However, it is a problem that can be solved by simply replacing the magnetic ballast with an electronic ballast. Even if you don't know how to do this, you can call up an electrician to install it properly for you. If by chance you're a handy person, then you can find these in most electrical supply stores. The whole idea is to alter your tanning bed into a safe atmosphere. Keep in mind; I don't know anyone who has done it.

If you're well informed about the health market and keeping tanning beds safe, it's definitely a huge market.

I understand you probably want to protect yourself prior to those summer and vacation times. In order to do this you have to know your options.

First and foremost you don't ever want to get a sunburn. Even if it doesn't feel hot outside, but the sun is still shining, don't be afraid to say you're staying in for a bit. It could be 40 degrees outside and you could still get a sunburn. So be careful.

Another thing to understand is that the sun utilizes its most intense rays around 11am to 1pm. So if you can, refrain from staying outside during this time. Then again, once 1:01pm rolls around it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be okay. If you gradually increase your exposure, you'll keep from getting a sunburn.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of sunscreen. This is primarily due to experts believing that the chemicals in the sunscreen contribute to skin cancer. It's been debated for quite awhile, but it's not worth the risk.

I hope all of this has been helpful and you are a little more informed about tanning beds. If you have your own tanning bed, chances are you're being subjected to these radiations.
