Discover the Top 6 Ways to Find Your Dog a New Home

It’s a heartbreaking situation, but it’s not uncommon. There are several reasons why pet owners find themselves unable to care for their beloved dog any longer. It’s a traumatic time for a family, but the amount of emotional pain can be reduced when you’re able to find a new home for your dog and peace of mind that he will be well cared for.

Step 1: Start your search soon and start close to home. You want to be sure that you allow enough time to find the perfect family for your dog and you don’t want to make any hasty decisions. Check with family, friends, coworkers and neighbors to see if any of them would be able to welcome a dog into their home.

Step 2: Call your veterinarian and dog sitter and explain your situation. These professionals come into contact with countless dog lovers and might have a family in mind.

Step 3: Take your dog to the local dog park and strike up conversations with other dog owners. You might discover that one of them is in search of a companion dog for their current pup.

Step 4: Search the local media outlets for families looking to adopt a dog. Oftentimes, animal lovers are hesitant to purchase a new pet from a pet mega store and would rather adopt an animal from a loving family. If prospective dog owners are serious, they will place an ad seeking a pet.

Step 5: Put an advertisement in the newspaper but be sure to list the dog "for sale". If you have to resort to finding a family that you have no connection with, you can at least deter people who aren’t serious by charging approximately $100. Conduct thorough interviews on the interested parties.

Step 6: If worse comes to worst and you find yourself running out of time, call your local humane society. Most humane societies are "no kill shelters" and you can hope that your pet will be adopted, and in the meantime, cared for.

Hopefully your efforts will put you in touch with a family that will love your dog as much you do. Although you will undoubtedly feel guilt over having had to place him for adoption, consider that your relentless search for the right family has been your final gift to your furry friend.
