Discover the Hidden Facts on Infertility

We are generally unaware of the basic facts that govern the condition of infertility. Read about them here and brace yourself against the condition.
If one is unaware of the facts on infertility as yet, it is high time to learn that infertility is on the rise, all over the world. Infertility can be defined as being unable to get pregnant even after trying for a year or so. Women who get pregnant but are unable to give birth to the baby due to repeated miscarriages are also thought to be infertile. Again the rising problem of infertility may be linked to any of the followings:

1. A woman who is within the child bearing age should ovulate regularly and properly, that is, she should release an egg from one of her ovaries regularly to ensure that she is not suffering from the problem of infertility. Any variation from this natural and regular process may lead to infertility.
2. The released egg should pass through one of her fallopian tubes towards her uterus in a natural process thus not creating a fallopian pregnancy.
3. The sperm from the male body should unite with the woman’s egg along the way and get properly fertilized.
4. The fertilized egg should get attached to the inside of the uterus (implantation).

Problems of infertility arise when any of these do not occur naturally. According to the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention in the US, around 7.3 million women aged 15-44 had problems in getting pregnant. However, it is highly unfair to put all the blame on the females. In fact, in only about 1/3 rd of all such cases, infertility is reportedly caused by the female factor or the woman. Whereas in another 1/3 rd of cases, infertility is caused to the male factor or the male. The remaining cases are due to a combination of both the male and female factors. Also, there are some Unknown Factors related to this ever-rising problem.

Infertility in the males is often associated with poor or no sperm generation as well as the lack of the ability of the sperm to reach the egg and fertilize it properly. Abnormality in the shape or size of the sperms can sometimes prevent it to move in the right direction. Often one may have congenital problems in creating sperms and problems may also arise later in life through some illness or injury. Cases of infertility in men caused by cystic fibrosis are not very rare either. On the other hand, his risk of infertility may become all the more distinct if the following issues are involved:

1. environmental toxins that the male is subjected to on regularly
2. excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages
3. drugs
4. cigarettes
5. radiation treatment which includes chemotherapy
6. certain medicines
7. age

With women, the problem of infertility is almost always linked with ovulation problems. Irregular or total absence of menstrual cycles in a young woman indicates that she is not ovulating properly. Added to this, blocked fallopian tubes due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis or surgery for an ectopic pregnancy can also cause infertility in a woman. Uterine fibroids and other uterine problems can also be responsible for her infertility. In her case, the risk of infertility gets more pronounced with some of the following:

1. heavy and rigid athletic training
2. heavy consumption of alcoholic drinks
3. drugs
4. stress
5. poor diet
6. health issues linked with hormonal changes
7. sexually transmitted diseases or STDs
8. age

However, it is very important to note that infertility does not necessarily mean that a couple can never have babies.
