Skin discoloration can ruin your overall appearance. This problem might affect entire body skin and sometimes it might just affect a certain part of your body. Discolored skin patches are most commonly caused due to over exposure to sunrays. Even the discolored skin spots, that are brown or black in color, medically termed as age spots appear on areas that are exposed to sunrays. This results because the harmful ultraviolet rays interfere with the normal functioning of pigment-producing cells. The color of your skin depends on the amount of these pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. Let's know more about the causes of discolored skin.

Causes of Discolored Skin
  • Age spots, as mentioned above are one of the causes of skin discoloration. These can be irregular in shape and size.
  • Vitiligo disease is another condition which can cause skin discoloration. This is known to be an inherited condition occurring when the immune system harms the pigment producing cells.
  • Melasma is another common cause of this skin disorder resulting due to hormonal imbalance. This leads to brown stains on your skin, that are especially common in women during the second half of pregnancy period. This can be caused as a result of birth control pills which can increase the production of melanin leading to dark spots on various areas of your body skin.
  • Discolored skin on certain area of your skin since birth can be just those birthmarks. These are usually red or brown in color and appear in various shapes.
  • Sometimes, lack of oxygen can also cause this skin condition. This will give your skin a bluish appearance. This condition is also known as cyanosis.
  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurring around wounds results in uneven skin tone.
  • If your skin has turned yellowish, it is most probably caused due to jaundice or a liver disease. Jaundice will also lead to yellowish eyes and nails
  • Reddish and itchy discolored skin can be caused due to a number of reason. Most common cause is sunburn. It can also be a rash or due to dermatitis, viral infection, etc.
Remedies for Discolored Skin

Wondering how to fix discolored skin? Here are a few easy remedies which you can opt for. Try these for about 2 weeks. If you do not notice any improvements, you can consult a doctor for the treatment. In case of large patches of discolored skin, it is best to consult a dermatologist to get the right treatment.
  • Take sandalwood powder, cucumber juice and tomato juice. Mix well to form a thick paste. Apply a thick layer on the affected skin and leave it for 20 minutes before washing off.
  • Raw and finely grated potato or potato juice is a great remedy for discolored skin. Potatoes contain bleaching agents which work in treating skin discoloration. Apply this twice a day, daily for a few days. Wash off after 30 minutes with cold water.
  • Apply fresh juice extracted from a lemon on the damaged skin. Leave it for 20 minutes and wash off. You can also rub lemon on such areas at least twice a day, for a few days.
