For students who want to pursue education and earn simultaneously, online schools are God send! The kind of flexibility and freedom they offer is unparalleled. However, students for whom money is not an issue and those you have time on their hands, should they go in for online schooling or should they settle for the traditional, full-time colleges? This debate has mainly arisen due to the various disadvantages of going to school online. As there are two sides of a coin, let's look at both the pros and cons of online schooling..

Disadvantages of Going to School Online

Before moving on to the benefits of going to school online, let's know a few of its drawbacks. The chief disadvantage of online schooling is that a student learns in a closed room environment, which might not add to his personal growth as much as a classroom environment where he gets to interact with instructors and fellow students. In a class, besides the subjects in courses, various issues pertaining to future personal and professional life are discussed. A student learns to see a topic from various points of view. This leads to his personal growth and prepares him to face life in an appropriate manner. With online schooling, this all round development is not possible. As everybody knows, the success in one's professional life is not just dependent on bookish knowledge, one's experience, attitude and knowledge of various life issues and situations is equally important. Thus, with online schooling, the scope of professional growth might be limited in some cases, though it may not always be true.

Then there are students who lack the self-motivation and self-discipline that is required to be a good learner in online schools. There are some students who need a classroom environment where there is a set schedule, proper study timings and regular feedback given, to study and learn. Students with such a temperament may not be a success with online schooling. Also, for students who are looking for a fun environment and the experience of hanging out and meeting with diverse kinds of people, online schooling may seem very drub.

It is a general perception amongst employers that students with traditional degrees are much more informed and experienced than those who go to online schools. That's why, in the industry, students with traditional degrees have an edge over those with online degrees. Last, but not the least, these days, there are many online schools which are not accredited, are fake and fleece students. So, one needs to be very careful with one's selection of an online school and course. This is in short about the disadvantages of going to school online. Now, let's look at the benefits of the same.

Advantages of Going to School Online

On the brighter side, as I mentioned earlier, going to school online offers easy accessibility and full freedom to the students. The students do not have to shift to another city to go to college. They no longer have to travel to college or buy books. They can study in the morning, afternoon, evening or night i.e. whenever they want to. This kind of convenience is not available with traditional college education.

Another reason behind online college degrees on rise is that they save a lot of time and money for the students as they do not have to spend on staying in an apartment or a hostel or on traveling or on buying books. Students can take up part-time jobs and even professionals can pursue online schooling along with their full-time careers. Moreover, whatever the working students study in their online course, they can actually apply it in their jobs, thus gaining a lot of practical knowledge of the theories taught in the course. This adds to their practical experience and helps them immensely in their professional life.

Looking at the advantages and disadvantages of going to school online, one can say only one thing i.e. to each their own! Working professionals or those students for whom having a regular income is essential, online schooling is the best option. However, if you ask me, those students who can afford to give their full-time to their studies, regular traditional college education is recommended. Taking one step at a time i.e. first education and then a job, is any day better for one's learning and growth, than doing a lot of things simultaneously.
