Disability Regulations for Taxi Drivers

Accessibility is an important issue which cab drivers need to be aware of.
To ensure that people with disabilities have adequate access to taxi cab services there is the disability discrimination act which was passed in 1995. The rules played out in the act are important for hackney cab as well as private hire drivers to be aware of. There are regulations being introduced which aim to get all taxis in the U.K. to conform with the act by 2020. All new taxis designed and built will be done so with adherence to these regulations.

How does this affect taxi drivers operations on a day to day basis? Dogs that assist people with disabilities need to be allowed access to a taxi. Failing to do so can lead to a fine and or suspension for the taxi driver. Extra fares are not to be applied to guide dogs. The only exception to not allowing a guide dog would be if the driver had a medical condition that meant he or she was unable to be around certain animals.

This being the case the driver would need to apply for an exemption certificate from their local council. Blind passengers should also be given assistance when necessary to access an exit a vehicle. With deaf passengers efforts at communication should be extended to pen and paper if necessary which taxi drivers should keep on hand.

Wheelchair access to taxis is something that the Government transport initiative 2010 is attempting to address. It is down to the taxi owner to ensure that their taxi is accessible to wheelchair users.

This is a major factor to consider for taxi drivers when purchasing a new cab. The lti companies new models come with accessibility features such as a fold out ramp for wheelchair access. All Peugeots E7 taxis are wheelchair accessible as having induction loops fitted for the hard of hearing. The cab manufacturers now design and build taxis with disabled access in mind.
