Dinosaur is the term given to various kinds of extinct reptiles of the Mesozoic, from 230 to 65 million years ago, when they were the dominant land animals on Earth. Thousands of dinosaur remains have been found worldwide. 'Fossils' are remains of prehistoric organisms, preserved by burial under countless layers of sedimentary material. They are a record of the history of life, beginning approximately 3.5 billion years ago. The study of fossils is called 'paleontology'.
