Different Types of House Siding
Installing a new house siding is an innovative way to modernize the exterior of your house. Sidings not only add to the beauty of the house but also help protect from wind, rain, snow, etc. They are simple to install, but before that, one has to choose which siding suits the house. Since there are many varieties of sidings available nowadays, selecting one can be difficult and confusing. No matter which type you choose, always keep in mind that it will remain on your house for years to come. Hence, make your mind up before you purchase one.

Different Types of House Sidings

The different types of house sidings are:
  • Vinyl Siding
It comes in strips and has a zip tool for joining and separating the strip. It has perforated holes at the top for fastening onto the exterior wall and interlocking flanges at the top and bottom which shield the exterior from the weather. Vinyl siding is available in a variety of colors and a range of styles like horizontal and vertical panels. It also comes in a variety of textures like wood shake and shingle style. It is also used as a retrofit siding and is often employed over wood sidings in many home repairing projects. It is not very expensive, requires less maintenance and no painting.
  • Wood Plank and Beveled Wood Siding
It is amongst the oldest types of house sidings. It comes in a wide variety of styles, textures and finishes. In the horizontal style, it comes in overlapping joints and in the vertical style, board on board, board and batten, channel-groove or tongue, are some common styles. Wood plank siding is also available in a plywood version, with unique face treatments and groove styles. It is easy to repair but demands an exterior finish such as a paint or stain. It requires high maintenance and gets easily damaged due to rotting, insects, wrapping and splitting. It is moderately expensive but the cost varies as per the type of wood and the style of siding used.
  • Cement Fiber Siding
It is the most recent development in residential siding and is the closest to emulating a natural wood grain, being virtually identical to some wood siding products. It is available in different styles like stucco panel, shingle or shake and beveled siding. Cement fiber siding is highly durable and is made from recyclable materials. It is cost effective and doesn't get damaged by rots and insects and hence, requires very low maintenance.
  • Aluminum Siding
It has evolved over the years and has become a popular siding choice for new houses. Like vinyl siding, aluminum siding comes in strips and has perforated holes at the top for fastening onto the exterior wall. It comes in a variety of colors and a wide range of styles like horizontal and vertical panels. Wood shake and shingle style are two of the many textures that comes in aluminum siding. It is also used as a retrofit siding for home improvement projects. It is moderately expensive and requires low maintenance, but denting is a common problem associated with it.
While shopping for the house siding, look for a siding material that not only suits the style of your home but also fits your lifestyle. Pricing, material and availability should be scrutinized before taking a decision. A house siding will not only improve your home's appearance but will also add value to it.
