Diet for Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a condition caused due to the insufficient production of hormones by the thyroid gland. Diet plays an important role in the treatment and cure of this condition as it helps in reduction of the symptoms. Some foods may also aggravate the symptoms, hence they should be avoided. What to Eat
A diet to combat hypothyroidism should include whole grains, natural foods, fibrous food, seafood, and food rich in iodine, minerals and vitamins. These foods improve the functioning of the thyroid gland, thereby reducing the symptoms and also keeps the weight gain in check. Small meals should be consumed at equal intervals instead of maintaining gap in between meals.
Iodine is essential for the production of thyroxine. So foods that are rich in iodine like, seafood and salt should be consumed. Iodine supplements can also be taken. Fruits, vegetables and foods like rice, oatmeal, etc. are rich sources of fiber which are essential to combat hypothyroidism and weight gain.
Selenium is considered to be an important mineral that can reduce the symptoms of this condition. It converts thyroxine produced by the body into its active form, T3. Therefore, the inclusion of selenium-rich foods like Brazilian nuts, meat, soybeans, etc. should be essentially included.
Vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamins B6, B3 and B2 are essential and can be taken in the form of supplements. Water consumption is another important factor that contributes to the cure of hypothyroidism. It is essential to consume as much water as possible to improve body metabolism. Consumption of certain herbs like bladderwrack, which contains a high amount of iodine can be helpful too.
What Not to Eat
People with hypothyroidism should avoid foods that can hamper the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. These foods, known as goitrogenic foods, include broccoli, sweet potato, rapeseed, cauliflower, mustard, radish, strawberry, peach, pear, etc. Avoid junk food, alcohol and foods rich in fat, starch and sugar. Vitamins and minerals containing high amounts of iron should be avoided. Carbohydrates should be obtained from natural foods; processed and refined foods should not be included in the diet.
Apart from incorporating the dietary restrictions, taking proper medication, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly is beneficial in curing hypothyroidism completely.
