Diesel Vs. Unleaded

If you were to compare the two fuels diesel and unleaded gasoline about 20 years ago, you wouldn't have much to compare, as gasoline would win hands down. However, this scenario has changed a lot since then. Earlier, diesel vehicles conjured the images of loud, cranky, tinpot trucks which looked as though they would break down any moment. However, today's diesel vehicles are sleeker and comparable with traditional gasoline vehicles in all respects. In this article, let us compare the two, by applying various parameters. Manufacturing Process
Both diesel and unleaded gasoline are hydrocarbons, which are derived from crude oil. The dead, decaying mass of plants, animals and other organisms is constantly acted upon by heat and pressure.This decaying mass is converted into hydrocarbons, which form the basis of crude oil. Both diesel and unleaded gasoline is derived from crude oil. The crude oil is then subjected to various purification and refining processes. The crude oil thus harvested is then transported to refineries, where it undergoes three stages separation, conversion and purification.

In the first stage, the crude oil is distilled in large tower distilleries.This process separates the liquids and gases by exposing them to tremendous heat. Depending upon the temperature variation at the top and bottom of the distillery, the gases like propane get accumulated at the bottom, petroleum products in the middle and lubricants at the bottom. The petroleum products are then separated and a catalyst is applied to derive gasoline, diesel and more propane. The last step includes purification, in which petroleum products are exposed to hydrogen and a catalyst in order to remove sulfur.

Efficiency
Diesel fuel is more efficient than unleaded gasoline. For every gallon of diesel fuel you burn, you travel a longer distance than with an unleaded gasoline fuel. The fuel efficiency of diesel makes it more preferable amongst people who always have to travel very long distances. On an average you need to burn 30 to 35% less diesel than gasoline for traveling the same distance. The early diesel engines were very inefficient in terms of fuel consumption. This made them least popular among vehicles owners and almost led to their ousting from the country. However, thereafter, the regulations on diesel manufacturing were tightened, which eventually resulted in better efficiency.

Performance
When you consider the power factor, gasoline naturally produces more power than the diesel engine. However, most diesel engines come with a V6 or turbo feature which effectively uses the torque produced by diesel for powerful acceleration. However, unleaded gasoline engines are quieter than diesel engines. Hence, offer maximum comfort while traveling.

Emission
Diesel emits more greenhouse gases than gasoline. However, when you consider the fuel efficiency of diesel, you actually have less emission for the distance traveled. In short, the efficiency of diesel offsets its higher emission. However, when you consider the cleanliness of a fuel, unleaded gasoline is far cleaner than diesel.

Prices
Diesel fuel is cheaper than unleaded gasoline. However, the exact difference between their prices cannot be found out owing to rising and falling fuel prices. Besides, the diesel engine efficiency makes it a more economical option.

Both the fuels, diesel and unleaded gasoline have their own advantages and disadvantages. If you are looking for an economical fuel, go for diesel powered vehicles, in other cases, you can settle for unleaded gasoline vehicles.
