Dibs 4

It keeps on going...
When I walked through the front door of our house, I saw Dean sitting in front of the TV. I asked, "She forgave you already?"
Kelly came walking out of her room and you could tell on the look on her face that she heard me talk to him. She said, "Yes I did. He apologized and bought me a necklace."
Before she started showing off the diamond-studded bribe, I fake gagged and then walked into my room, throwing my stuff on the bean bag chair on the floor. I took my cell phone out of my pocket and looked at the new text message from Kelsey that I had never gotten to read.
It said: R U home from Jason’s yet? When u get home, call me!
I really didn’t feel like talking to her, because I know she would get mad at me for hanging out with Jason before her. I shut off the phone so she wouldn’t be able to call me and then plopped myself on my bed and turned on my laptop.

Today was Friday and I was so happy about that fact. This past week had been so confusing and I was just ready for it to be over.
I walked over to my locker and saw Kelsey digging stuff out of hers. When she heard me she snapped her head up so fast, she hit the locker above her. She rubbed her forehead and then looked at me. "Why didn’t you call me last night? Did you get my text message?"
I sighed; I knew this would be coming. I said, "My phone died. I forgot to charge it, sorry." I hated lying to her, but I didn’t know what else to do. I knew she wouldn’t like me hanging out with him like I had yesterday, even though I hadn’t even planned to see him.
"It’s fine, but what happened yesterday? Did you see him? Did you put in a good word for me?"
I dug around in my head for a second, trying to come up with a good lie. I used the first thing that popped in my head. "He wasn’t there. Molly said something about him going to a friend’s house."
Her face fell slightly and she looked disappointed. I said, "I’m sorry."
She looked towards the front of the school and then her face perked up dramatically. I glanced over where she was looking and saw Jason and Molly walking into the school.
I quickly turned my head and hoped to goodness that he wouldn’t acknowledge me or what happened yesterday. Luckily I heard Kelsey say, "God, I hate Paige. She’s hanging all over him like cheese on freaking macaroni."
I laughed, but not because it was funny. I laughed due to the relief.

When I got to sixth hour, I saw him sitting in his desk right behind mine. He smiled at me when I walked in and I couldn’t help but notice how gorgeous he was. I blushed and then smiled back before sitting down.
I heard him say from behind me, "Hey."
I turned around to face him, shuffling a little in my seat. I said, "Hi."
He said, "Me, Molly, and some friends were thinking about going to the movies tonight. What do you think? You wanna come?"
Luckily before I could answer, the teacher yelled at us to stop talking and pay attention. All through class, I kept wondering whether or not to go with them. I wanted to go; I really, really wanted to go, but I didn’t think it would be a good idea.
Kelsey would kill me if she knew I went, but how would she find out? I knew it was sort of betraying her, because she liked him so much. I mean, she was my best friend. She was there for me when my parents died. She didn’t deserve to be lied to.
But I guess that maybe it wasn’t betraying her. She just said that I couldn’t date him, which I wouldn’t be doing. I wouldn’t be a date; I was just going to the movies with him and a bunch of other people.
When class officially ended, he asked, "So do you wanna come?"
I nodded and said, "Sure."
His entire face lit up as he smiled and said, "Great, we’ll pick you up at around 8:30."
I smiled back, "See you later." After picking up my books and binder, I quickly walked out of the room, not wanting Kelsey to see us talking. She would freak out and get mad at me for not putting in a good word.
As Kelsey and I were walking home, she asked, "Do you want to go to the movies tonight or something? I’m going to be bored all weekend. Well I do have a family reunion barbeque type thing on Sunday, but I’m sure that’ll be boring too."
I came up with a lie quickly and said, "I can’t. Me and my sister…are going…look at houses."
Her face looked like she had been punched in the stomach. "Wait, you’re moving? Where? When?"
Panic shot through me. I said, "Oh, um…no. Dean’s moving near us. Like in the same neighborhood."
She quickly smiled again. "Oh thank goodness. I seriously thought you were moving like out of the school district or something."
I laughed and said, "No, no. We’re staying here."
She laughed and said, "Okay. Well maybe tomorrow or something."
I looked ahead and noticed my house was only a few steps away. I said, "Sure, that’d be fun. Bye," and then quickly made my way into my house.
I sat on the couch and let the guilt overflow me. I really shouldn’t have agreed to go to the movies with Jason tonight.
But later that night, when I hopped into his car and saw the smile on his face, Kelsey was the furthest thing from my mind.
