Chapter 4

I marched into the hospital ward. "What is it Abigail pet? Is the baby okay? Why aren't you at school?" What rewind. "Baby?"
"You didn't know? Stella is due her third child in over four months. When Steve found out yesterday. I don't mean to be rude but he didn't look very happy."
"That's Steve for you."
"You seemed quite worried and upset before you came in."

"What's the matter?"
So I told her everything about what Ashely had said and how Stacey and Jade believed that I set fire to myself.
"Oh you poor darling."
"Due to all the suicide business, I remembered Luke Johnston. Sarah I don't suppose - I'm sorry but it's the hospitals policy we can not give you any information." I pleaded with Sarah saying how I knew Lily. Finally she agreed somehow.
"If anyone finds out about this I shall lose my job. Let me warn you whatever you are going to discover the truth is going to be very bitter, are you sure you can handle it?"
"Yes Sarah I'm sure!"

Me and Sarah went to this old cottage in the middle of nowhere. Sarah didn't speak once when we were in the car. I felt quite apprehensive before knocking on the door. My palms were sweating like mad! Maybe this wasn't such a good idea, maybe the truth would be too horrific. But it was too late now. The door creaked open a woman with along sad face opened the door. Her eyes which had once been filled with happiness were filled with emptiness.

I was startled when the woman screamed. "Go away, leave my Luke alone, he has not done anything!" The woman began to pull her hair.
"What is it Aunty Linda?"
"Look whoever you are, I don't know what you have said to my aunt but - Lily." I squeaked.
"Why are you here Abigail? And Sarah how could you bring her here?"
"I'm sorry Lily, it's just that Abigail wanted to know about Luke."

A man with lines on his forehead greeted me by my shaking hand. "Don't mind my wife Linda, she has just been quite depressed since Luke's death. She has been diagnosed with severe depression." "That's really sad."
"You must be wondering how Luke died?" I nodded. He gestured for me to sit down.
"Have a seat Abigail."

"Well, when Little Luke was born that was a big miracle. Doctors had said Linda couldn't have any children. So when we heard she was expecting a boy, we were over the moon! Next thing you know we had nappies and toys everywhere. By the time Luke was seven, his teacher said he was outstanding at maths and English and he would go far. So when Steve found out about this he decided to take my son to boarding school."

"Steve?" "Steve's my brother unfortunately." Steve never really spoke about his family but then again I never asked.

Paul continued. "I can still remember my poor boy's face saying please Daddy don't take me to boarding school." Linda wailed and clenched her heart like it was breaking Sarah walked up to her and put her arm around her. "We begged and begged Steve to let our son stay but he was having none of it. He said that he would take us to court because we were worthless and had no money in his eyes. He took my son away from me and then we got the call it was awful."

"Mr Johnston we are really sorry to inform you that your son Luke Johnston has been beaten up by a gang of boys, he is in a very critical condition, please come immediately." I gasped in horror. "There's more." "When we went to the hospital the doctors said that my son was paralyzed for life."

"Daddy, why can't I move my foot." He would ask again and again. It was awful seeing him like that. I felt so useless watching him in agony. Steve was right I am worthless.

"That's not true Paul do not listen to that lowlife you are worth ten of him!" Paul smiled but then sighed.

"For nine years my son had been in torturous pain. Then a few days ago we found out that someone had switched off the machine that had been functioning Luke." "But if Luke committed suicide he would have needed help because he couldn't move." "Exactly I'm not mad at the person who did it, I just want to know what the person's intentions were. They did it to help him or because they disliked him."

Lily played with her hair nervously. "Well me and Abigail should be getting off now." Me and Lily were walking back to the house. "Why weren't you at school" Lily asked me. I repeated her question to her. "If you don't tell, I won't." We shook on it. "You could have told me you know about Luke. He was my sort of cousin you know."
"Yeah I guess."

I didn't know what I was going to expect when I went home but I did not expect that. Stella was bawling her eyes out on the floor. She had a black eye and a red nose. Libby was screaming at Steve.

"You can't do that to my mother just for adding too much salt in your food you disgust me!" Steve throttled Libby's neck. "Do you really want the same thing happening to you, do you?"
"Ged Ged off me!" Then it all happened really quickly, Libby grabbed the kitchen knife and threatened to use it.

But Steve not knowing what was coming for him choked with laughter. "Bet you don't even know how to use that. You ain't got it in ya. You wouldn't dare! Libby got the knife and pierced Steve straight in the chest, it was awful to watch. Don't get me wrong Steve's my enemy and I hate him but it is still awful to watch someone getting murdered right, before your very eyes. I still can't get my head around it Libby Daddy's, called princess had killed her father."

Stella was screaming in pain. "Libby what have you done, call the ambulance please. If not for Steve then for me I think I'm having a panic attack!" But Libby just stood there. Lily grabbed her mobile but Libby threw it on to the ground. There was no phone because control freak Steve had hid the phone apparently we were not Eco-friendly. I mean how much crap can this guy come up with! A police siren came up towards our house just as Stella was struggling to breathe.

"Mum." Lily cried. She shook Stella fiercely but there was no sign of movement. The door bell rang, Libby answered the door. I was shocked Libby had just killed both her parents and she was answering the door calmly. Two policemen walked in."Abigail Thornton you are charged with the murder of Steve Duncan and Stella Duncan." I could not believe what I was hearing. "I haven't done anything. No you have got the wrong person, please you're making a BIG mistake!" I was then dragged into a police car.

Chapter 5

I was asked so many questions like - "Why did you do it? Why result to such extreme measures?"

I felt like smacking the woman on her face. I mean why was I being asked all these questions whilst the real killer was on the loose. "No comment." I repeated for the seventh time. I had tried telling them I was innocent but after that failed, I just stuck to no comment.

The woman was getting fed up. "Well because you can't obviously admit to your mistakes, you shall send one night in this prison cell and then let's see if we can get a confession out of you."

"Morgan take her away!" Police officers can be so stupid here. I was innocent, me being questioned whilst Libby was out somewhere, probably having a party or plotting her next murder! I mean how can she live with herself knowing that she has killed both her parents.

The prison was awful, the bed if you could call it that consisted off 'a hard old mattress' which was 1000 years old. It was the most uncomfiest most uncomfortable freezing cold night ever! Apart from a dodgy looking toilet, there was nothing else in that cell. The place was hell! I tried to sleep but I could hear people screaming from their prison cells. I did not sleep a wink that night, didn't expect to. My mind was buzzing I felt so sorry for Lily, she had lost not one but both her parents.

When Mum died I guess, I had no one else to talk to except Felix, my cat. I guess that's why I found it hard watching her go. I had begged and begged Steve to let me keep him, but Steve was like a tape that had been replayed over and over again. "No Abigail. Don't you know the meaning of no?"

Just because he was allergic to cats, I bet he made that up as well. Steve was never really there for me, he was more of a bodyguard than a father figure. He always insisted that I should call him Dad but I would always reply. "What? Dad? Do you even know the meaning of that word? First make yourself worthy of that title." Then he would go on and on about how I was a good for nothing cheeky scumbag that never knows when to shut up. I faded away from the flashback and folded my hands like how they do in church. "Steve you have made my life hell and may God make your life hell, wherever you are. Remember the time when you called me scum. Well you're the one that is scum and your daughter has proven that by murdering you! Remember how you used to laughed when I couldn't go to the school concert because I was too sick. Well Selfish Steve who's laughing now?"

The next morning I was given food that looked like someone had thrown up in it. The Morgan dude was waiting for me to eat it when I said, "I'm not going to eat THAT if that's what you think."

"Personally Miss Abigail I don't care whatever you do with the damn food or if there's poison in it." "My job is to serve you food and that's what I have done." "I can see that Morgan and I can also see you are spiteful to say how you don't care if poison is in my food." "Whatever Miss Brook would like a word."

I am not going to go into detail of what Brook, the Crook said because I was not listening to myself but what I did manage to hear at the end was. "To commit a crime is one thing but to not own up to it is another crime in the laws eyes. Because you are only 15, you can not go to prison but please Miss Thornton, the mistake of thinking that just because you can't go to jail that you're free."

"You shall go to a lot of youth detention center for 9 weeks, you shall also not be aloud outside after 7 because you are tagged and don't even think of taking the tag off because our super systems can track your every movement."
"Yeah Yeah".

I was sent home later that day as soon as I came in, there were cardboard boxes everywhere and a to let sign outside the house. Inside the house there were blood stains on the carpet as soon as I set my eyes on Libby. I charged in by pulling at her ponytails. "You lying pink pig I hate you!" Paul came out of the kitchen. "Abigail, Abigail this is not helping anyone, you're only going to make it worse for yourself!"
"Now come here I need a word with you. Due to the circumstances, you, Lily and Libby are going into care."
"What why can't you look after us?"
"That's what we have been doing all morning sitting in a court room demanding custody but we weren't granted it."
"That is rubbish how can a bunch of people with silly wigs decide what's best for us?"
"I know it's rubbish but life is rubbish and we have to learn to deal with it."
"This diary was once your mother's, she had once told me that she wanted you to have it. There's a whole side of the story of her life and there's another side where you can write the story of your life. Your social worker Sharon is coming to pick you up in an hour and make sure you take special care of this diary."
"I will write the whole chapter of my life in this diary and as my mother once said the pen is in my hand."

Chapter 6

Our social worker Sharon drove us to the care home. "It's called Dan and Co's home, you shall love it there, just you wait and see!"

As soon as we came in, there were children everywhere. Dan smiled as we came in but as soon as Sharon walked out his smile turned into a foul expression. "Now this is a care home and here we have some rules and this." He snatched my mobile and threw it in the bin. "Is not allowed in here. He nudged Lily. "And you emorella, no makeup allowed in here. He pointed at Libby's heels. "And they are not allowed in here."

"That's ridiculous." barked Libby. "They allowed mobiles in Tracy Beaker."
"Sunshine, if you don't know, we are not in Tracy Beaker. This is real life. And in real life you follow Dan's rules, now less of the cheek." He pointed to this little girl who must have been about 7 or 8 "You scoot and what have I told you about eating before meal time."

"I'm sorry Dan I won't do it next time."
"Hmm I'm sure, you won't and I'll make sure of it now pass me my sharp ruler." She hesitated. "I said pass me the damn ruler." She blinked back her tears. "Give me your hand."

Thwack Thwack Thwack! Was the noise of Dan beating a child's hand! "Now go back to the others Daniella and don't cry or you're not getting any lunch!"
"How can you be so cruel to a little child, how can you be so heartless?" I yelled.
"Excuse me, says the person who murdered her stepdad and his wife."
"That was not me!"
"Okay then."

We were shown our rooms later that night. I had to sleep in the little girl Daniella's room.
"Hey Dani it must have really hurt. Why don't you tell Sharon?"
"I can't, Dan says if I tell, he will do something that he might regret."
"So he threatened you?"
"Yeah."

Lily came in my room after Daniella had fallen asleep. "There's something, I need to tell you Abigail. Libby has an attention disorder that makes her do things for fun."
"So when Libby stabbed Steve her normal self wouldn't do that but her disorder made her do that." "Exactly right."
"Blimey."
"That still does not excuse her for blaming me."
"Course it don't, but Abigail at least we now know that we need to help her."

Later that night it must have been about midnight, I didn't know because Dinosaur Dan threw my phone in the bin. I took out the diary that Paul had given me earlier. It felt like the right time to write in it. I was going to write about everything that happened in this place and as my mum once told me. "No one can take your memories away from you." I turned off the light.
