Things Required
  • Plain fabric of your choice
  • Contrasting patterned fabric
  • Fusible interfacing
  • Fusible fleece fabric
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery thread
  • Needle
Procedure

First you need to cut the plain fabric with a pair of sharp scissors into rectangular shapes measuring 20 inches X 13 inches. This will make the front and back of the handmade diaper bag pattern. Cut the patterned fabric, fusible interfacing, and fleece fabric in the same dimensions. For the bags sides cut the fabrics measuring 7 inches X 13 inches. Cut another fabric measuring 20 inches X 7 inches for the bottom of the bag.

This diaper bag will have two interior pockets on the sides, one interior pocket on the front, two exterior pockets on the side and of course two straps. For the interior pockets on the side, cut fabric into dimensions 4inches X13 inches. For the single interior pocket on the front, cut fabric in dimensions 20 inches X 6 inches. For the side exterior pockets cut fabrics in dimension 6 inches X 6.5 inches. For straps cut fabrics excluding the fleece fabric into 4 inches X 30 inches. All the above fabric should be cut with ½ inch seam allowance throughout.

Once you are done with cutting all the fabric, arrange the fabrics on your work table. Next iron the fusible interfacing on the front and back sides of the fabric. Do the same on the bottom side of the fabric. Iron the fusible fleece fabric on the bottom fabric section. Sew the bottom fabric to the two front and back fabric for the diaper bag with the help of needle and embroidery thread. Now sew the interior pocket on the interior of the front section of the bag. Iron the fusible interfacing on the fabric side section and sew them to the front, bottom and back sections of the bag. Make sure that the stitches are tiny and neat and are almost invisible. If you own a sewing machine, you can sew the diaper bag on it.

Once the basic diaper bag is sewn, it is time to attach the two side interior pockets and two side exterior pockets. Sew the edges of the fabric that you have cut in dimensions of 20 inches X 6 inches and attach them to the interior side of the bag. Do the same on the interior of the other side of the diaper bag. Next attach the fabrics that you have cut in dimensions 6 inches X 6.5 inches to the exterior side of the bag. Stitch the edges of the strap fabric and attach them to top sides of the diaper bag.

These handmade diaper bags will cost you lot less than designer diaper bags. More advanced patterns like quilted diaper bag pattern can be downloaded for free from many websites. If you are good at sewing, then you can definitely give it a try.
