Diabetes Prevention: Consistent High Quality Sleep Is Key

A sleep study conducted at the University of Chicago found that even young healthy volunteers became pre-diabetic after only six days of restricted sleep. The volunteers were permitted to sleep only four hours a night during those six days; as a consequence, they became abnormally hungry due to a drop in leptin levels, a hormone that tells your brain when you are full. Because of their findings, it is believed that a lack of sleep may result in an increase of the likelihood of diabetes, as well as contributing significantly to obesity.
Furthermore, a study performed by the American Diabetes Society found that otherwise healthy and young individuals who typically slept fewer than 6.5 hours per night had a greater insulin resistance than those who slept between 7.5 and 8.5 hours on average. Clearly, there is an unfortunate connection between diabetes and sleep disorders - and often those who suffer from sleep disorders are at a higher risk for developing diabetes, or they are already afflicted by the disease.
