Diabetes insipidus is a disorder in which the output of urine increases at an abnormal rate. The fluid intake of the person increases and the person also feels thirsty. This occurs due to several reasons which we will see later. We should keep in mind that this illness is not the same as diabetes mellitus. Although in both cases the output of urine increases, the causes and symptoms are however different. If a person is suffering, there is nothing to worry about, as there are various diabetes insipidus treatments available. But before that, let us see what are the causes and symptoms.

Causes and Symptoms

One cause is a tumor in the pituitary gland. Also if a person injures his head, which in turn damages the pituitary gland, then again there are chances for the person to suffer from diabetes insipidus. Tumor in the brain or maybe some brain related problems such as meningitis is another cause. If there is a hemorrhage in the same gland, then again this causes the illness. Disease in the kidney can also cause this problem is some people.

The symptoms are increase in the production of urine, and the urine is diluted and colorless. The person also shows signs of dehydration and frequently feels thirsty. Constipation and rapid heart rate also indicates that the person might be suffering from this problem. Low pressure and cases of bed wetting are some other symptoms.

Treatments

When a person shows signs of passing a large amount of urine and excessive thirst, treatments should be started immediately. The treatments usually varies depending on the type of illness the person is suffering from. There are mainly four types - central diabetes insipidus, where the person suffers from hormone imbalance due to lack of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH), nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, where the kidneys of the patient do not respond properly to the ADH, dispogenic diabetes insipidus, which is caused by mental illness and this type, however, has no treatment except for proper mental treatment, and gestational diabetes insipidus is rare and is caused by abnormal thirst during pregnancy.

In case the symptoms indicate mild illness, no such treatment is needed. But for severe cases, immediate medical attention is required. Low production of ADH causes this problem, hence the doctors might suggest desmopressin. This is acts as a replacement for the ADH and is more powerful than it. It stops the kidneys from passing out urine when the level of water in the body is low. The doctors will give a spray called Desmospray which you have to take in through your nose. Along with this, you will also be given some tablets. This might have certain side effects such as headache or nausea or maybe blocked or runny nose. Nosebleeds and stomach pains is also a side effect of this medication.

Thiazide diuretics are also used as a treatment option. This medication makes the urine more concentrated. This medication too has certain side effects such as dizziness while standing, indigestion and even the skin becomes very sensitive. Another diabetic insipidus treatment is the non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also known as (NSAIDs). If used together with thiazide diuretics, this helps to reduce the volume of the urine further. But, if this is used for a long time then the person might be at the risk of suffering from peptic ulcer.

Thus, these are the several treatment methods which one can carry out in case the person is suffering from this problem. If treated properly, then it can be cured fast. Just follow whatever the doctor says and maintain a good diet. Then you will not face any problem.
