Diabetes is a condition in which the blood sugar becomes abnormally high. A proper diet, however, can effectively control this condition. A diabetes control diet, along with prescribed medicines, is the key to manage fluctuation in blood sugar levels. Patients will face difficulty managing their diabetes if certain foods are consumed. The main aim of a diabetes diet menu is to control the blood glucose, so as to allow the patient to lead a healthy normal life.

High Fiber Foods

Eating proteins from lean sources is essential for diabetics to maintain overall health. Along with proteins, fresh fruits should also consumed as they are rich in vitamins.

Control Diabetes with Diet and Exercise
Exercise for diabetic patients is as important as following a diabetes control diet. Daily exercise for about 30 - 60 minutes can go a long way in controlling diabetes. Many people with diabetes strictly follow an exercise routine to keep diabetes related health problems at bay. Physical activities such as walking, bicycling, and jogging are some of the most recommended exercises for diabetics.

Avoid High Sugar Foods
Bringing diabetes under control without avoiding high sugar content foods is simply not possible. People suffering from diabetes need to be aware of foods containing high amount of sweet stuff. Eating less sugar is a must for diabetes. Limiting sugar intake is what is expected in the diet to control diabetes. Foods that are high in sugar are:

  • Concentrated fruit juices
  • Canned fruits
Patients with diabetes are also asked to minimize intake of processed foods such as pastas, breads, and baked goods. These foods contain sugar that gets easily absorbed by the body.

Carbohydrates
Any diet for diabetes control is incomplete without sufficient intake of carbohydrates. However, carbohydrates have to be taken in moderate levels to control diabetes. Foods loaded with carbohydrates are notorious in increasing blood sugar levels. Even simple and concentrated carbohydrates found in potatoes, white bread, and white rice are also not good for diabetics. Food such as candies and soda are high in carbohydrates and also do not provide any health benefits. Healthy carbohydrates that help to maintain blood glucose are found in the following foods:
  • Brown rice
  • Oatmeal
  • Whole wheat pastas
  • Whole grain bread
  • Vegetables
Avoid Heavy Meals

Obesity is strongly associated with diabetes patients. Heavy meals can always be replaced by smaller meals, preferably 6 times in a day. Eating large meals can unknowingly cause a large amount of sugar to be consumed, which is very bad for diabetics. This can be prevented by having 5 - 6 small meals throughout the day, instead of 3 large meals.
