I woke to find that Ian's nose was nuzzling my neck. I sighed and slouched down the stairs to start making tea. I grabbed the kettle and started heating it while I ruffled around in the cupboards for tea bags. A knock at the door caused me to startle and I slammed my head on the wood of the bench. Grumbling and rubbing the back of my head I opened the door.
There have been a lot of times in my life that I have fallen into someone I love's arms, a lot of times when they hugged me close and told me that everything would be alright, a lot of times where I have felt safe and protected in the arms of a loved one. This was such a time.
My father cradled me like a small child; he murmured words of reassurance as he carried me to and lay me down on the lounge. He kissed my forehead and stroked back my hair as I basked in his parental gaze.
"LACE!" a muffled shout came from upstairs as I heard Ian wake up. I couldn't help but smile at his concern. My dad grinned and jogged up the stairs to greet Ian as I finished making tea. Ian came down the stairs animatedly talking to dad, his face lit up when I handed him a cup of tea. "Scotch fingers?" he asked hopefully and I laughed as I ruffled through the cupboards. We all sat down and feasted on the scotch fingers.
'Lace, honey, I didn't come back home just to chat, I have some news." I watched him expectantly and he smiled. "We're moving."
I blanched.
"Where?" I asked my voice cracking.
"It's a town that has a boarding school, co-ed." I waited. "It's six hours away."
And just like that, my world fell out from beneath me.
