Designing a Deck - How to Design a Deck
The designing of a deck should be based on the purpose it is going to serve. You have to include the accessories and design the ambiance according to your requirements. This article highlights on how to design a deck.
Position of the Deck
The decision about the position of your deck or to the side of your house the deck will be built is important. Some people prefer it at the rear of the house and others want it at the side of the house. You can also make the deck a free-standing one, away from the house. The weather is another factor that has to be taken under consideration while making this decision. A north-facing deck is bound to receive much less sunlight as compared to a south facing deck. The disadvantage of north facing deck is that it will get chill winds in the spring or fall; while a south-facing deck will get all the summer heat throughout the day. When the purpose of the deck is to entertain your friends with meals, your deck should be attached to the kitchen or dining room.
Overall Design of the Deck
The size and style of your deck depends on your needs. People often keep the size of the deck as big as the largest room of the house or equivalent to the size of the living room. Deck should be positioned in such a manner that the indoor outdoor transition will be easier. Usually, there is one entrance from the deck to the home inside and two gateways to access the yard. If you have to install a new door in your house for the deck, do it before the construction of the deck. Sliding glass doors or French doors are the best for this purpose, as you get a nice view. Railings of the deck need to be built to provide safety particularly for the kids. You can decorate the deck by putting up pot plants around its edges. It can give a feel of staying closer to nature. The plants chosen for the deck should complement the plants of the adjacent garden, if any. You can also use accessories like arbors where vines are grown so that the deck is protected from extreme weather.
Designing a Deck for Dinners
If you like to utilize your deck for dining purpose, its center point will be the tables that you are going to lay out. The size of the table will be determined by the number of people that you have to accommodate. For a few close friends, a small fashionable bistro table is enough. Whereas, for large gatherings, a large wooden table with extensions will be the right choice. Patio umbrellas with attractive patterns and sizes are available in the market and you must include them in your deck design. The materials of these umbrellas can be aluminum, wood or the simple canvas.
Designing a Deck for Parties
You can invite all your friends and have an outdoor party with them on the deck. You have to make seating arrangements, these can be built-in as well. If your party is in the evening you have to make arrangements for the fire. For this, you can keep an outdoor fireplace to achieve the feel of a campfire. Otherwise, patio heater is more convenient way of making the deck comfortable. For a daytime party an outdoor fan will give a relief to your guests from the outside heat. You also have to arrange for an outdoor bar on the deck. If required, you can keep a barbecue as well, to cook food.
Designing a Deck for Kids
Deck is a place where the kids can have the fun of outdoors. They can play with their toys, do some painting and stay close to the natural environment. Choose the patio furniture that is kid-friendly. It should have a suitable storage space for the toys. You can keep a weather-resistant LCD television or full sound system for their entertainment. You can put up daybeds to let them enjoy the experience of sleeping under the stars like in a camp. I am sure the kids will enjoy this a lot.
