Deserts of the World
Deserts have covered one fifth of the earth. The sandy barren lands, hot and cold extreme conditions are there but still are attraction to some people.
These are some of the deserts spread across from all over the world.
- African Deserts
1. Sahara: It’s name is derived from Arabic word Sahar which means desert. This is the largest dessert in the world. Located in North Africa has spread over 8,600,000 square km. Sahara is bounded by Atlantic Ocean, Atlas range of mountains, and red Sea.
2. Libyan: This is also African dessert has spread over 1,100,000 sq. km. It covers eastern Libya and western Egypt.
3. Kalahari: Kalahari Desert has occupied about 900,000 sq. km. Area. It is also covered by gravel plains and sand dunes. It covers most part of Botswana, Namibia And South Africa. - Asian Deserts
1. Arabian Desert: This is largest Asian desert has spread over 2,300,000 sq. km. It has occupied almost whole Arabian Peninsula. The climate here is extremely dry and cold.
2. Gobi: Gobi is one of the Asia’s large deserts. It covers China and Southern part of Mongolia. This desert has occupied 1,300,000 sq. km. area of China and Southern Mongolia. This desert is cold and not sandy but bare rocks and arid land.
3. Thar: The desert is located between Western India and Southeastern Pakistan. In Pakistan Sindh province and in India Rajastan, Punjab, Haryana and Gujrat this desert has spread. - Australian Deserts
1. Great Victoria: Great Victoria is also one of the largest desserts in the world. It has covered 424, 400 sq. km. area of South and Western Australia. There you can find some farming profession there as the atmosphere is dry. The desert consists of sand hills, mulga and spinifex grass, wide variety of shrubs and plants as rainfall is very little here.
2. Great Sandy: In Northern Western Australia this desert has covered 360,000 sq. km. area, which is sparsely populated. This is a flat area between Pilbara and Kimberley rocky ranges. - North American Desserts
1. Great Basin: A region of Western United States covers 200,000 sq. km of most of Nevada and half of Utah. Because of its Northern latitude it is the cool desert.
2. Sonoran: A North American Desert is also called Gila Desert. It’s an arid region of North America occupies 310,800 sq. km. area. Here are the metropolitan cities like Phoenix, Arizona etc. so the population is not rare here. - South American Desserts
1. Patagonian Desert: This is the semiarid area in South America. The large desert has occupied over 673, 000 sq. km area of Southern Argentina. This is the cold desert where the temperature does not cross 12 degree Celsius.
2. Atacama: Atacama Desert is a place where hardly the rain falls. The average rainfall recorded here is 1 mm per year. It lies between Andes Mountains and Pacific Ocean covering area of 181,300 sq. km. The area is sparsely populated and desolate landscape.
