Delusional Love: Chapter 43 (Part 2)
Hell is the place on Earth!
"Ma'am please calm down," the cops tried to pull me apart from him. "Take him to the police station," ordered the taller cop and the officer who previously came with Adam followed the instruction.
I broke down. "This is all my fault," I kept mumbling, "I shouldn't have trusted him." "Calm down Ma'am," said the officer and sat beside me, "We've informed your parents in America and they'll be here any moment. You need to relax child, your aunt will be all right," he said with concern.
I couldn't speak anything but nodded. "It seems to me," said the officer, "that the man who hit your aunt, Adam, is no stranger to you. You know him, right?"
I wiped my tears and nodded again. "Who is he?" Asked the officer again.
"He... he was my fiancé sir," I answered him reluctantly.
"Fiancé?" He seemed startle to hear it.
"Yes, we got engaged few weeks ago."
"But you don't live here, right?"
"Yes, I don't. I came here to visit my sick aunt and met Adam and fell... fell in love. We got engaged few weeks ago."
"Does your aunt know about this?"
"Yes, she does. She knows all about it."
"What happened then?"
"Adam began to act strangely. It wasn't working out anymore. He cheated on me so I brokeup with him."
"And you think he tried to kill your aunt to get back at you?"
The last words that Adam said to me were now crawling in my mind. "I'll rob you of all the happiness. You'll curse the day you met me. I'll make your life hell, were his last words to me," I revealed to the officer.
"Can you come with us and give your statement?"
"I sure can," was my firm reply.
I gave my statement to the police regarding Adam and what seemed to be the case of Driving under the influence was now appearing to be a perfectly planned murder. Even though I wished him to rot in hell but still the thought of him doing this to me was brutally stabbing me from inside. He claimed to love me! Is this what he called love? He has always tried to hurt me in one way or the other but now he has crossed all the limits. I spent the night at the hospital cursing myself to fall in love with a man who doesn't even care about anyone's life, a man for whom love and murder are child's play. My poor aunt is paying the price for my sins, if anything happens to her it would be no one else' fault but mine.
Next morning I woke up to the voice of my mother who was trying to wake me up. "Mom," I cried in amusement and hugged her. It was indeed a relief to see my mom after so long and to have her with me in the time when I need her the most.
"Everything will be alright honey," she said patting my back, holding me tightly. A mother's caress is all you need when you are stuck in a despicable situation.
My eyes caught the sight of my dad standing beside aunt's bed. He looked at her miserably and turned to face me. I could sense the pain and anger in his eyes. Pain for aunt and anger for me. I was frightened myself, thinking about my father's reaction to the whole situation. He came towards me silently as I was waiting for him to lash out at me. My mother got up from the seat, wondering what was about to come. Dad sat in her place and gazed at me as I tried hard to not to meet his gaze. Holding me in his arms he said, "Are you alright honey?" To my utter surprise and I broke down instantly. "It is my entire fault dad," I said weeping and explained him and mom the circumstances that lead to this tragedy. They both listened with patience and concern.
"I never thought he would do this to me even when he broke my heart," I said finishing my story.
"This sick bastard needs to be behind the bars," blurted Dad.
"He's dangerous," added Mom, "Look what he did to Matilda. He doesn't care about the consequences. What if he tries to harm you, Hannah? We need to do something about him."
"I will not let anything happen to her. She has already given her statement and we'll make sure he stays behind the bar for very long," said Dad with sheer confidence.
As we were talking the cops entered the room. "I am Officer Richard Beckett," introduced the cop who recorded my statement last night. "And I am Lightman," said the taller one.
"We will record Ms. Bennet's statement once she is awake. Meanwhile, can you tell us more about Adam? Like did he ever tell you that he has a criminal record?" Asked Mr. Beckett.
I was bewildered. Even though Adam committed a heinous crime still I couldn't dare to reveal his secret, not even to my parents.
"Criminal record?" Asked my father inquisitively.
"Yes, he murdered his own father but he was plead not guilty for being an addict and mentally unstable."
My father looked at me in disbelief. My head was dug in the ground as I couldn't face anyone or utter a single word.
"He was in rehab and mental institution," Mr. Beckett further added.
I was startled to hear that he had been to a mental institution as he never told me about it himself.
"Did you know about all this Ms. Hannah?" Asked the officer.
"Ummm," I was speechless, words were struck in my throat, "Yes, I knew," I answered reluctantly.
"Hannah how could you?" Asked my mom startled.
"And still you got engaged to him. Are you insane?" Asked my dad.
"Daddy I... I believed him. He told me the whole story. He didn't mean to kill his father..."
"You believed a psychopath and now look what happened," blurted Dad.
I was on the verge of breaking down again but somehow I gathered myself.
"Did he tell you anything else?" Asked Mr. Becket.
"No, sir."
"We talked to his ex girlfriend, Bianca. She said she hasn't seen him since that night," revealed he.
"I want him behind the bars this time," said my Dad turning towards him.
"Consider it done," was officer's reply.
