Common Shrubs
Why do you think is the population of the deer rising in number? Why do you think they are trespassing our gardens and destroying plants? Well, what with the decrease in number of natural predators, and also deer hunting being banned and on top of that clearing of forests, deer are now moving into residential areas in search for food. Our garden plants make their food. There are however some deciduous, evergreen shrubs and plants which deer do not eat. Either the taste of the shrub, or the smell or maybe difficulty in digesting that plant or toxins present in the plants, keep the deer away. Whatever be the reason, deer refrain themselves from these plants and thus remain away from our garden. Now isn't that exactly what we want? Here are some such plants which you can plant while gardening.
- Juniper: These are slow growing dense evergreen plants which can sometimes grow up to a height of even 90 feet. These plants have needle like foliage and the needles is what keeps the deer at bay. These plants also produce some really attractive blue colored seed cones.
- Mugo Pine: The scientific name of this deer resistant shrub is Pinus mugo. These plants too, like the Juniper have needle-like structures on them and unlike the other pine trees, the prickly feeling caused by these needles remains for a long time, hence acting as a good deer repellent.
- Dapne: These shrubs are toxic shrubs that grows up to 3 to 4 feet tall and bear attractive white flowers during spring and red flowers during the summers. It is the toxin present in the leaves that prevents the deer from chewing on them.
- Dianthus: The Dianthus or the Dianthus sp., grows up to a height of 15 to 16 inches only, but can grow well in places where other plants cannot grow and their thick growth makes a thick evergreen mat which prevents the deer from coming into your lawn.
