Decorating the Library Or Study

If you’re trying to decorate a room in your home that you’d like to use for a library or study, stop trying to make it look like the ones you see in the movies. Create a room that works for you and you’ll find that it’s the best study of all.
When you watch movies, you notice that every large house has a library or study, where the wealthy keep their books, their drinks and their butlers. These same libraries and studies are adorned with large, beautiful maple desks and bookcases over wooden floors covered with gorgeous imported oriental area rugs—entertaining guests would be a dream come true if we all had the same type of library or study in our homes.

Unfortunately, we can’t all have the libraries and studies we see in the movies. In fact, most of us are lucky if we have enough room in our homes to dedicate to such a room, let alone keep as a room solely for entertaining guests. And most of us certainly do not have a butler—unless you count yourself as a butler or a maid.

So what can you do to decorate a room that you’d like to use as a library or a study?

When you’re trying to decorate a room that you want to be your library or study but also has to be used for other things, like the computer room, the game room, and the guest room all in one, there are many different ways to decorate sufficiently and beautifully, so you can get as close to the movies as possible. The best way is to think of it as decorating a media room, this way you will think of all the possibilities.

One of the first things you should do when you’re trying to utilize the same space for a library as for other rooms is make sure that you’ve set the room up to work properly as a library. A library needs both a comfortable and of course, bookshelves, as well as adequate lighting. One of the easiest ways to turn just a corner of the room into your miniature library is to purchase an oriental area rug. Oriental area rugs will not only give the space class but will also separate it from the rest of the room.

However, if you’re interested in creating a room that works together one-hundred percent of the time and has little to no separation, then one of the first things you’ll want to do is purchase an area rug that complements all of the different components of the room. A modern area rug or a single color, like a beige area rug, can help you create a sense of synthesis in the room. You should also choose woods that are complementary in color for all of your furniture items.

If you are lucky enough to have enough space to dedicate to an entire library and study area, you’ll want to make sure that you choose furniture and area rugs that create a nice feeling and sense of peace that promotes both concentration and relaxation.

Remember, when you’re trying to create a library or study in your home, you shouldn’t try too hard to recreate the images you see in films and on television. Just create a space that works for you and your home, where you can read, relax and have a good time.
