Decisions FINALE

Kim stared at the phone in her hand, dumbfounded. Had she really just heard that? Was this for real? Slowly she brought the phone back to her ear and asked her mum to repeat.

Romeo winced as Kim jumped on him and shrieked into his ear. He couldn’t make out a word she was saying, and she didn’t even give him a chance to say happy 18th birthday. Finally when she let go of him, he kissed her and gave her the little silver gift bag. She barely glanced at it, instead grabbing his hand and towing him into the house.

"I HAVE GOT THE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVERRRRRRRRR!" She screamed.
"You haven’t even looked at it yet" Romeo replied, confused.
"Not yours," she said then quickly - as she saw his face fall – ", Not that yours isn’t great, but this is…wow" she smiled. Romeo rolled his eyes and pouted.
"Well whose then? And what is it?" he asked.

Kim’s eyes glittered and she sat down next to him.

Early on in the day, she had gotten a phone call. It was her mum. At first Kim was thinking of ignoring it, but then, it was her birthday. Maybe her mum was going to wish her a happy day? So she answered it. Her mum had sounded happy.
"Kimmy?" her mum had giggled. That started the bells in Kim’s head. Her mum hadn’t called her Kimmy since her dad died.
"Yeah…?"

"I have some news for you. And I think you’re going to like it. But first I have something more important to say"
"Ok"
"I’m so sorry. I know that since your father died I’ve been blaming you and harboring bad feelings. I’ve taken my frustration and loneliness out on you. I’m so sorry about that baby. I didn’t mean to, but I know what I’ve done wrong now"
Kim blinked, and said nothing. She was majorly confused. But there was a feeling of happiness creeping through her. Was she finally going to have a mother?
"Ok" was all she said, not trusting herself to say any more in case she burst the bubble.

"You see, while on this cruise, I met a man called Andrew. He’s a psychiatrist, and a strong Christian. I told him every thing that has ever happened and he told me all the wrongs. He’s made me see that I’ve been neglecting my baby, and for that I’m truly truly sorry. I don’t know how many times I’m gonna say it, but I’m never gonna stop meaning it. How you’ve lived with me for this long I don’t know"

"Oh, mum. It’s alright. I’m just glad you’re not going to take it out on me anymore" the tears were running down Kim’s face. They were tears of Joy. She had been living without a mother for years. And without knowing it, she had brought herself up. She talked for a while about the past and then what was going to happen.
"Ah yes. That brings me to the good news. I have decided to move in with Andrew, and he lives in Brazil. You’re old enough now to live by yourself - Happy Birthday by the way darling - and so I’ve looked into a few things. I have signed the deed to the house over to you. Consider it your birthday present"

Kim couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing was real.
"Pardon me?"
"Yes! The house is yours! I’m going to come down and visit a lot, so don’t think I’m trying to get rid of you. But I know you’re a responsible young woman, and I know you’re going to be fine. Don’t worry; I’ll help you whenever you need it. Don’t worry about the bills or anything; I’m still going to pay for them. Just keep the house clean, and we’re cool"

"MUM I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! ARGHHHHHHHHH! OH MY GODDDDDD!" Kim had laughed and then after thanking her mum a lot hung up.

Romeo looked at her in des-belief. Was she shitting him?
"Seriously? This house…is yours?" he asked.
Kim nodded eagerly.
"YES! It’s MINNNNNNNNNNNNNNE!"
"Jeez, that is the best present ever" he ran his hands through his hair.

Kim remembered his present which was clutched in her hand. She pulled out the little box and broke into a grin as she opened it.
"It’s beautiful!" she whispered.

It was a gold locket, with Love you forever Kim engraved on the back in tiny letters. There were two pictures inside, both of him and her cuddled up and laughing.
Romeo blushed and put it on for her. She looked at him and bit her lip.
"I’m not gonna cry" she said firmly, but laughed as a tear trickled out of her eye. It was such a beautiful and thoughtful present.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him slowly.
"Thank you"
"It’s fine"
"I'll always love you Romeo"

Romeo chuckled as she fingered the locket. She looked up at him from under her eyelashes and pulled him towards the stairs. Kim was pretty sure of what she wanted to do. She had never wanted to be with Romeo more than at that moment. And she knew she truly loved him, she was ready. Her birthday was extra special just because Romeo was there with her.

If love is a roller coaster ride, then Kim didn’t care about the downs, because the ups were more than worth any riches in the world.
