Death on the Battlefield
Two soldiers on opposing armies meet in the middle of the battlefield. Can a war be averted?
A lone soldier approached an enemy combatant in the middle of the battlefield. All eyes were on the two men for this intense confrontation. Without a hint of perspiration, the advancing soldier said, "We have a more experienced leader. So, we have a better battle plan and are prepared to execute it. This is your last chance. Tell your ruler to surrender and your troops’ lives will be spared."
The second soldier snickered before turning to look at the formidable army of men behind him. "We will never surrender. We are prepared to fight to the death."
Stone-faced, the first soldier said, "Then your death will be in vain." With that, the two soldiers began to fight and the war had officially begun. Even though there would soon be death and mayhem all around them, they stayed focused on each other. Locked in epic battle, the two were fighting to a standstill.
Amid the chaos, another soldier approached the two men. But before the new soldier could land a blow, a dark knight raced in on horseback, trampling the new arrival. In a sign of victory, the knight’s horse lifted his front two legs high in the air, nearly throwing his rider.
The dark uniformed soldier admired the brave knight who saved his life. Before he could utter a "thank you", the dark knight had vanished to attack more enemies.
"He was my closest friend," the light uniformed soldier said. With the loss of a friend who had been by his side for years, he fought with renewed intensity.
The two men battled to a deadlock for nearly an hour. By now, the battlefield was filled with casualties on both sides, but one army was devastated.
The dark uniformed soldier proceeded to mock his foe. "Look around you. There’s no way you can win. You’re the only soldier left. Only you and your ruler remain, and if he cared about your life, he’d surrender."
The brave soldier angrily replied, "You don’t get it. Soldiers don’t quit. No matter how bleak, I will fight for my ruler."
"You’re naïve. He’s not treating you as a soldier, but a mere pawn in his suicide mission."
"I’m no one’s pawn! I’m a decorated sold…" The soldier never completed his sentence, attacked by a clergyman from the other side of the battlefield. As the fallen soldier was removed from the battlefield, his king, seeing he was all alone, fell to the ground and surrendered.
