Dear Diary Chapter 29
ANABEL GREY's POV:
I ducked into the nearest side alley just as the bullet wizzed by, chipping the side of the brick building beside me. The warehouse was still three buildings down, but they already knew we were here. I heard a noise beside me and almost screamed when I felt a hand go over my mouth. Vinny pulled my face around to look at him, his other hand held his gun which was pressed to his lips in a hush symbol. "Stay here." He commanded, then turned and sneaked farther into the alley. A pipe spewing steam blocked him from my view.
I rolled my eyes, there was no way in hell I was staying here. I turned my head and saw a ladder leading to the top of the building. I grabbed the thick metal bars, ignoring the muck that oozed between my fingers and pulled myself up onto the bottom rung. I looked up, finally remembering exactly how afraid of heights I was. None of that mattered to me anymore, only Nick. I continued to the top, never looking down. When I reached the top ledge I slowly slid my leg over the thick concrete ledge then rolled a few feet until I was far from the ledge. Standing shakily to my feet I was finally able to see how far up I was. I swayed, about to collapse, the remembered why I was here.
Sneaking along the rooftops, and contracting mild hysteria every time I had to go from one roof to another, I made it all the way to the warehouse, unnoticed. After rejoicing for a good ten seconds, I shimmied down some type of hatch on the roof. The door of the hatch was heavy so when I pulled it shut behind me it made a loud metallic "ting", I froze and listened for anyone to hear. The rain hitting the roof was much louder inside of the warehouse, probably because of the tin roof and tons of echoing space. The gunshots may not have even been heard. I hoped Vinny was okay.
After poking around and hopelessly trying to determine exactly what part of the warehouse I was in, I heard footsteps on the metal grating that I knew to be the stairs. And then voices, "Sorry, Nick, doesn't look like your little girlfriend is coming to save you after all, huh?" Asked the first voice, I recognized it instantly as Jackie Santoro, the voice that replied made my knees weak.
"You touch her, asshole, and I'll kill you." I had followed the voices to a door, which I cracked open to see Nick being led down the hall by Jackie, his hands appeared to be tied behind his back and Jackie pulled him by his elbow, the whole time Nick was jerking.
"Sure, sure." Jackie didn't sound convinced, but I had seen Nick kill, I didn't doubt him for a second. Personally, I wanted to be the one to kill Jackie. My thoughts automatically went to the handgun stuffed in the back of my jeans, and I moved my hand to it to make sure it was there. Cold metal touching my fingertips assured me that it was.
Jackie pulled open the door and briefly I was able to see the smooty glass of the office room. I knew that one.
He shoved Nick into the room and locked the door, then he turned and put the key around his neck. I needed that key.
As he approached the room I was in, a turn before the stairs, I considered my options. Quickly, I picked the one that made me the happiest. I grabbed the gun in one hand and the back of Jackie's shirt in the other, just as he was walking past my door, and pulled him violently into the room with me. Only by catching him by surprise was I able to push him against the wall, close the door, cover his mouth with my one free hand, and shove the gun to his forehead with the other.
"I could kill you now, and no one would hear, so I suggest you keep your voice as low as possible." I advised coldly, pushing harder against his temple.
He winced. Then nodded. "What do you want?" He didn't sound happy to see me.
"Well, the key for starters," I said, ripping the chain from around his neck, "then it'd be nice if you turn around." When he didn't respond I said, "and that wasn't really a request. More of a demand." Again I pressed harder. He complied and, while his back was turned, I hit him over the head with the gun as hard as I could, hoping to break his scull, but settling for the low thunking and the collapse of his body.
I ran out of the door, only pausing to lock it behind me, and down to the dark office. I unlocked the door and cracked it open slowly, trying not to startle him. All of a sudden, the door was yanked open from the inside and someone pulled me in, then slammed me against the wall, their hand around my throat. Even though it was so dark, I thought the impact of the wall and my head made me see stars, "Aah," I moaned, and instantly the hand was moved from my throat to my back and I was pulled into a breathtaking hug. Literally, I could not breathe.
"Ana!" He said, I realized with a wave of relief that the man was Nick. At that moment my legs chose to give out. He caught me before I fell and pulled me to the couch and then into his arms. "Ana, ooh my god, I was so worried, never do anything that stupid again." I was barely able to concentrate on his words but, slowly, the meaning of speech was coming back to me.
I breathed, "Nick, I'm so sorry! I am completely useless without you, and there's so much you need to know-" He kissed me, frantically and I searched his face over with my hands, sobbing the whole time.
As the kiss slowed and we were both able to breathe I remembered Vinny in the alley below. "Nick! I have you tell you-"
I was cut off by the door swinging open.
