Dear Diary 2 Chapter 9

Voices
I know what you're grumbling to yourself right now but, in case you didn't hear from one of my other stories, my computer melted down and I lost every single chapter of everything I've written and I had to rewrite the ones I was about to post. If you've ever rewritten anything, you can appreciate how utterly boring that experience is. I know this chapter is short but this is just to show you that I in fact did NOT fall into a black hole in cyberspace.

Dear Diary 2

Voices

It was three in the morning, according to Nick's wrist watch, when we finally reached a sign of civilization. The cell phones had gone dead long ago- along with the feeling in my feet- and so we had to depend on a watch to prove that we were still part of the universe. Perhaps it was just that we were determined to keep walking as long as the watch ticked, but we didn't stop walking again after our rest last night.

Completely demoralized, we continued on our path into a town we couldn't prove existed. That was until three.

I had been staring down at my feet, trying to keep their motion, when suddenly the dirt turned to stone. At first I believed I'd run off the road again but Nick's hand latched on to my shoulder and he forced me to stop moving. I looked to him in surprise and he did not return my stare. His eyes were trained intently on the blackness in front of us and he nodded his head for me to look as well.

I squinted into the darkness, looking for any hint of life. Suddenly I heard a child scream. A scream of laughter. "Nick?" I looked at him, excitement evident in my eyes.

"Come on," he whispered, taking my and leading me off the road. I couldn't see where we were going and I didn't know how he did, but he glided us through the densely packed undergrowth and around any major obsticles as if the sun was already up.

Eventually the laughing got louder and I was able to discern two distinct voices. Nick stopped and pulled us behind an ancient oak. He looked in my eyes, "Ana, we have to be careful." I gave him a look of confusion, they were just children. Somehow, despite the darkness, he recognized the look. "I know what you're thinking but..." he seemed to hesitate for a second, as if he wasn't even sure of what he was saying, "something isn't right about all of this. I couldn't find anything wrong with the car Ana, and then the thing in the tree and that damn wall. None of this makes any sense, so please Ana, just trust me."

I stared at him one long second before whispering, "I do."

My head spun for a few seconds, like all the pieces to some puzzle were sliding into place but too fast, all at once it was too much for me to handle. Nick's hand found mine again and he kissed me softly on the lips. "Lets go."
