Dear Diary 2: Chapter 5

Dear Diary 2: Chapter 5
Nick's POV:

She was welded to my side, every now and then I felt her cringe as the cut on her arm brushed against my jacket, and at her pain I cringed. She didn't deserve this. If I would have just used the cell phone where it still got reception then we wouldn't have this problem.

Problem was a harsh understatement. We were not-so-gracefully stumbling our way through an abandoned forest, where apparently only creatures with silvery eyes lived, we were without food, and we may or may not be being followed. Just hours ago we were in a car, on our way to Ana's Aunt Clara's house, where cookies and laughter awaited us.

Every time I heard the crack of a stick or the sound of something brush against a tree I whipped my head in the direction. I felt like we were not the predators here. No, I was sure that there was something else.

"Ana, what did you see exactly?" I asked in the lowest voice I could.

She cringed, though this time not from the pain of the cut, "just the eyes." She spoke as though she knew the danger of the silver eyed demon wasn't behind us.

"It's okay, we got away from it." I said as she shuddered against my chest.

She shook her head, "No, Nick, I have this feeling that we didn't."

I rubbed her back, trying unsuccessfully to comfort her. "I have that same feeling."

She sighed and leaned into my touch, "where are we going?"

It was my turn to wonder outloud, "I don't know. I don't even know where we are, a place like this can't exist. This is way too strange."

She nodded against my chest, "I know what you mean, but I have a feeling that Black Lake doesn’t exist. That's the whole problem."

Even as she spoke I realized that we had entered a less dense place in the woods. Not a clearing because the dark shadows still rose all around us, but something had changed. Also there was a lighter sky over this place. Not so light that the woods around us became visible, no we still stumbled our way forward, but it was grey and not so black. And for the first time I realized that there were clouds in the sky. Rain clouds.

I felt Ana's head jerk to the side, as if she had heard something that I hadn't. She let go of me and disappeared into the dark, "Ana, wait!" I called, darting after her. I ran forward, but not very far because her hand on my chest stopped me. "Ana, what the he-" she cut me off by putting her finger to my lips. Then she picked up my hand and put it against something hard, cold, and damp. I reacted to the shock of it by pulling my hand back.

"Ana, what is it?" I asked, breathlessly.

She waited a second before she answered, seeming to doubt it herself. "A wall."

"It can't be Ana..." I said, but I believed her.

She nodded, seeing the disbelief on my face even in the dark. "Where there's a wall..."

At her words I looked up, to where the top of the wall should be, but this wall extended higher. I stepped back once and then again, trying to find the top. When I finally did I was shocked. This wall had been built to keep something out. And people just didn't build walls anymore, something was wrong here.

"There's people..." I finished her sentence.
