Duchovny’s lawyer Stanton "Larry" Stein confirmed that the actor entered a facility to receive treatment for an addiction to sex. Duchovny said in a statement, "I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction. I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family." Duchovny plays a troubled novelist named Hank Moody who has a hard time with fidelity in the hit Showtime series Californication and he played a husband who is a sex addict in the 2005 movie Trust the Man.

Duchovny, 48, has been married to actress Tea Leoni for 11 years. They were married in May 1997 and have two children – daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd Miller, 6. In 1997, Duchovny denied in an interview that he was a sex addict and a year later his new wife Leoni also rubbished the rumors. She said in an interview, "David was accused of being a sex addict which I always found very exciting. And then I found out it wasn’t true."

The second season of Californication premieres September 28. Filming on the season’s 12 episodes wrapped last month. Richard Licata, Showtime’s executive VP or Corporate Communications, said in a statement, "All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time." Duchovny played Fox Mulder on the hit series "The X-Files." Two movies have been made from the series, the second "he X-Files: I Want to Believe" opened in theaters this summer.
