What is a Data Center?
A data center, also known as a server farm, is a facility or a room that houses large computer, telecommunication, and composite data storage systems. A conventional data center also includes supererogatory backup power supplies, data communication connection facilities, network security equipment, and environmental control which includes the main air conditioning controls and file suppression. In simple words, it is a control and server room of all the information technology-related equipment in a particular company.

For efficient functioning of data centers, system administrators are assigned the responsibility of taking proper care and carrying out maintenance tasks. For this purpose, they have to follow several operational procedures and practices. They also have to ensure that the best technologies are incorporated in the facilities that would enable the company's IT infrastructure to provide efficacious, precise, and prompt service to users.
The IT leadership has to create effective processes for proper functioning of all equipment, servers, databases, and internal and external communication systems. It also has to select and employ personnel for collective and collaborative decision-making regarding the proper functioning of data centers. For getting high output from, and reducing maintenance and energy costs of data centers, an energy management program has to be introduced which should include issues such as cost control and risk management. Construction and operating cost minimization should be promoted by implementing energy optimization at the earliest phases of data center's design. The design should also include facilities for integrated monitoring, evaluating, and controlling. A particular design may not be suitable for the proper functioning of all types of data centers. The data center's design should be determined depending on the equipment and systems that are to be connected and controlled.
Airflow management in data centers is a very important factor that may effect energy efficiency. Proper significance should be given to control and sequestration of hot and cold air streams. A quality central and ventilation systems should be installed in order to operate the data centers expeditiously, as the data center load builds up over time. There should be an incorporation of highly-efficient centralized chiller plants which are designed and controlled to better the functioning of the entire cooling system which includes pumps and towers. Centralized air-handling devices should be installed, instead of separate distributed devices.
These are few of the data center best practices that are presently followed by companies to maintain and improve the level of information technology functioning.
