Professional beach volleyball player May-Treanor, 33, was injured on the set Friday while practicing and was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital. May-Treanor’s future on the show is up in the air, but it has been rumored that she will not be able to continue in the competition. ABC said in a statement, "Misty May-Treanor sustained an injury on Friday and received immediate medical attention. Despite previous reports, she did not break her ankle." The statement also said, "She is resting comfortably at home. Doctors will reevaluate her condition on Monday and determine the outcome of her participation on the show." A source said that the Olympic gold-medalist will require surgery.
May-Treanor and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy have been training really hard. She reportedly said of her dancing and her partner, "I was frustrated more in myself (during the dance). He wants to see the best in me and I want the best out of me." Last week, judge Carrie Ann Inaba said that she felt the couple’s Pasa Doble was "most ambitious" this early in the game. Bruno Tonioli said, "I love your energy, I love what you put into it. You forget the finesse – you put so much power [that] sometimes you stumble a little bit. But you did a good job."
May-Treanor began dating Florida Marlins baseball player Matt Treanor in January 2004 and they were married ten months later. She, along with her partner Kerri Walsh, won the gold medal at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. In the history of professional beach volleyball, May-Treanor and Walsh are the first team to win consecutive gold medals at the Olympics.
