Dancing with the Stars Addresses Controversies, Michael Bolton Sent Home
DWTS is continuing to soar in the ratings and now has some in-show controversies to help stoke that fire.
Bruno Tonioli was unmerciful in his assessment of Michael Bolton's dance performance on Monday night. Even his fellow judges took issue with Tonioli's comments, which included something to the effect that Bolton had delivered one of the worst performances in the history of the show with his Monday routine. Obviously, part of the show's make-up is the sometimes humorous commentary of the judges when assessing the dancing skills of competitors who may have little or no previous dance experience.
And while Bolton may have chosen to be a bit thin-skinned about Tonioli's critique, especially in light of the fact that it is a reality television show geared toward entertainment, it seems that Bruno may have crossed the line a little. On Tuesday's episode, Bruno stood by his commentary, which seems to suggest that may be he has a bit of an issue with Bolton on a personal level. It's hard to imagine him going as hard after some of the other contestants.
The producers understand, of course, that this type of issue on the show is only going to make the show more compelling for viewers. To this point, DWTS has managed to be a relatively feel-good competition. Even the losers are often celebrated by the judges and the hosts for having given a great effort, despite horrible dancing.
As the show grows in popularity, however, they're going to look for new ways to keep things fresh. In addition to Bruno's comments about Bolton, Monday's episode included Sarah Palin in the audience to watch her daughter Bristol compete. When she was introduced by the host, the crowd could be hear booing in the background. Tuesday night's episode took some time to point out that the booing heard when Palin was introduced was directed at the judge's scoring of a previous routine. Again, no matter to DWTS - the show is the real winner in all of this.
