Cutting Your Own Hair

Cutting your own hair is not really passé and can be done with these simple steps mentioned below. This is basically for beginners who are eager to try hair cutting at home.
Cutting Your Own Hair
Getting a haircut done was not a big task for me. All I had to do was ring up my beauty salon, fix an appointment and make a beeline for the ever important meet with my hair stylist for the snazziest haircut possible. Now, I don’t think cutting hair is a really difficult task as long as somebody else is doing it. But then, one fine day, I bumped into a friend who gave me a completely different perspective to hair cutting! She just walked towards me and was as cool as a cucumber when I asked her, where she had her haircut done. Cutting hair to this friend did not mean the beauty salon and hairstylists! She very coolly replied to my inquisitive question saying she was the one who had cut her own hair! Cutting your own hair was something I had not even dreamed about and here, this woman was sitting smugly before me as if it was the coolest thing in the world! ‘So, is it really possible that one can indulge in cutting hair at home?’, I wondered. Well, this friend certainly had various ways to tackle hair cutting at home. When I had a tete-a-tete with her over a mug full of chocolate milkshake, I realized hair cutting is not really as difficult as it seems! In fact, it is a completely different experience and of course, you don’t end up spending big bucks.

Cutting Your Own Hair:

How does one go about cutting one’s own hair? My friend has been kind enough to share some of these pointers with me, which I would love to share with you, in turn!
  • The first thing you will need is a good pair of scissors. Cutting your own hair, no matter what style, needs a sharp pair of scissors, which will help you manage this well.
  • Always dampen your hair before you start any hair cutting. Hair need to washed clean and shampooed. If your hair has dried naturally, you can use a special can with a nozzle to spray some water on the hair. This will be useful even when you have begun cutting.
  • Always, go slow and easy when it comes to cutting your own hair. Do not hurry when you are moving the scissors.
  • Choose a good area in your house, where you can have ample light and also a nice cabinet or shelf where you can keep the scissors, combs, the bottle of water and other accessories you need for hair cutting.
  • Decide upon the length of the hair you are planning to maintain. This would also help you in knowing what kind of haircut you need to go in for.
  • When you are cutting your hair, you need to stick to simple styles that prove to be easy to manage as well. The easiest haircut would be where the length is maintained at one level. Once you have started with the hair cutting, you first need to divide the hair into small sections. Next you need to comb your hair straight out from your scalp. Then, hold a section between the index and the middle finger. Finalize the length you want to keep for the hair and gently cut off all the excess hair. Keep repeating the process, till you have the desired length.
  • When it comes to the hair on the backside of your head, you may need to use a handheld mirror so that you can get a good judgment to cutting hair.
  • How you hold your comb is also important when it comes to hair cutting. You may also need to transfer your comb from one hand to the other. Cutting your own hair requires one hand to hold and the other to work the scissors. The comb will help you manage how you move around the scissors, and give a definition to your hair.
  • You can even comb all the wet hair and bend over. Next, you can smoothen all the sections of the hair and work slowly to get rid of the excess hair. Stick to one side and then move on to the other. Once you are done, you need to check again if there are any long strands of hair left in between.
  • Short hair can make use of electric clippers to be able to manage your hair.
Well, when you begin cutting you own hair, remember to keep it simple and basic. With time, you can experiment further. You can go in for layered cuts or razor cuts, whatever seems to be comfortable for you. As for my friend, I am sure she will have something new for me the next time!
