Cures for Fever Blisters
Fever blisters are also commonly known as cold sores, though the exact medical term for fever blisters is herpes labialis. It is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus that enters our body through the nose and mouth. They can remain dormant for several months or even years, on the nerves of the skin, before causing the appearance of small red or brown colored lesions on the mouth, especially on the upper lip.

Fever blisters are characterized by a remission period, during which these lesions disappear. They again appear due to the reactivation of the virus, but exactly what causes this reactivation is not known properly. However, factors like fever, cold, infection, a weakened immune system, high level of arginine and even stress and exposure to sunlight, are supposed to play an important role in the sudden appearance of fever blisters by activating the virus. Let's have a look at how to cure fever blisters.

Cures for Fever Blisters
There are no permanent cures for fever blisters and they are often treated with anti-viral medications. These medications can accelerate the healing process and reduce the severity of the outbreak. Oral anti-viral medications used for treating fever blisters include acyclovir, famciclovir and valacyclovir, while denavir is used for topical application. These drugs have been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) of the United States, for treating fever blisters. It has been found that taking l-lysine supplementation can reduce the number of outbreaks of fever blisters. Increasing the intake of zinc, iron and vitamins like vitamin A, C can also have beneficial effects in the treatment of fever blisters.

Home Remedies for Fever Blisters
The simplest, yet the most effective home remedy for fever blisters is to apply ice on the affected area. This can prevent the development and spread of these blisters to other parts of the body. Certain herbs like licorice, lemon balm, aloe vera, tea, chamomile and echinacea are some other effective remedies for fever blisters. Lemon balm is known for its anti-viral properties, while licorice can prevent viral replication. Therefore, applying licorice on the affected area can provide quick relief in fever blisters. On the other hand, lemon balm is suitable for both internal and external applications for treating fever blisters.

Echinacea is a Chinese herb, which can strengthen the immune system and help fight against the virus that causes cold sores or fever blisters. It can also protect the skin and the mucus membrane from the effects of viral enzyme. Applying tea bags on the blisters is another excellent home remedy. Tea contains a compound known as tannic acid, that has anti-viral properties. Olive oil extract also has anti-viral properties, while chamomile can be used for relieving inflammation associated with the blisters. For relieving itching and burning sensations, corn starch and neem paste can be used on the affected area.

Food to Avoid in Fever Blisters
Some studies have shown that arginine, an amino acid, may be associated with the reactivation of the herpes simplex virus. Therefore, it is important to avoid or reduce the amount of certain foods that contain a high level of arginine. Such foods include peas, whole wheat, grains, oatmeal and chocolates.

If your fever blisters do not heal even after taking sufficient care and you are experience this condition frequently, with irritation in the eyes and fever, it is better to consult a certified physician for proper treatment. Along with the treatment, also try to control the triggering factors like fatigue, stress and exposure to bright sunlight and cold weather, in order to reduce the frequency of fever blisters.
