Tips and Techniques
Start With Crochet: Kindly note, to make a baby blanket you will have to use three skeins of yarn or any warm bulky weight yarn and a crochet hook (size K). If you vary your crochet hook to size J, there would be variation in the blanket depending upon the hook.
Instructions: Chain 75 sts. Later, single crochet stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook. Keep single crocheting in each chain till the final stage of the foundation row. Turn the work around and chain once again. Begin to single crochet stitch in each single crochet. Rep, the turning around and chain once again. In each, keep single crocheting till all the three skeins of yarn are complete, and new skeins would be needed. Sew the ends from the start of the chain to the new attached skeins. Your baby blanket (for a 6-month old baby) is finally complete.
Baby Blanket Variations: For creating various blanket patterns, try spinning in contrasting colors in every 10-15 rows. Such a style will give you striped pattern in the most random form. Try on some interesting colors for a sweet warm blanket. May be a pink or yellow, if it's a baby girl, and blue or green if it's a boy. Use natural colors, so that even your baby's room theme gibes the blanket. Directions to Crochet
Initially chain 134
Row 1: Just for this row, you will have to crochet in back lps, in 2nd ch from the crochet hook sc the same. Work the sc in each across.
Row 2: In the second step, you have to ch 3 (count it as the 1st dc). Now dc in both the lps of each of the next 2 sc. * skip 3 sc of the prev row and then 3 dc, ch 1 and 3 dc all again in the back lp of the next sc. Once again skip the 3 sc of the prev row and dc in both the lps of each of the next 3 sc **. You will have to rep the procedure from * to ** several times as needed across the row. Next comes the row 3.
Row 3: Here in, you will have to ch 3 (count it as the 1st dc). Then, dc in both the lps of each of next 2 dc. *ch 3 and skip the next 3 dc in ch 1 (space work 3 sc), ch 3 again, skip next 3 dc, and dc in both the lps of each of next 3 dc **. You will have to rep the procedure from * to ** across row.
Row 4: Once again, ch 3 (count it as the 1st dc). Later, dc in both the lps of each of next 2 dc, *skip the ch-3, and skip the next sc and then 3 dc, ch 1 and 3 dc again in all the back lp of next sc. Once you finish that, skip next sc, skip the next ch-3 and dc in both the lps of each of next 3 dc **. Similarly, rep the procedure from * to ** across row.
Once you finish crocheting all these rows one after another, it's time to crochet some additional rows.
Additional Rows: Repeat rows 3 and 4 till you have the baby blanket measuring your desired size, 41''.
After this, shift to the last and the final row by first rep row 3 in this procedure.
Final Row: ch 1, then sc in the first dc and sc in each of next 2 dc. * 2 sc in ch-3 space work and sc in both the lps of each of the next 3 sts **. Rep the entire procedure from * to ** across row and end the row with a 2 sc in the final ch-3 space work. Work sc in each of the final 3 dc and tie off the yarn.
With these 'hopefully' simple pattern instructions, hereafter you will successfully know how to crochet a blanket as warm and lovely as the lacy afghan for your roly-poly pie. For an add-on decoration to your crochet baby blanket, you can attach colorful ribbons and/or ready-made cartoon cutouts worth stitching to the blanket. You just have to loosely crochet all of this stuff once you have finished your entire blanket properly.
