Crime Doesn't Pay

Short story fiction.
Julia is stuck in San Quentin for life. She is in protective custody and waits for time to go day by day. Flashback to 10 years ago where it all started. Shawn had taken the test and after many try, he passed the exam to become a police officer. He entered the police academy met three good buddies named Al, Stephanie and Julia. The studied hard and graduated. They made it. All of them got assigned to the patrol division.

Things changed over the years. Shawn got married to this fine chick and had two kids. Shawn was in metro patrol division. Later Shawn got transferred to narcotics division as a detective. As the years went by slowly, the kids grew bigger and older; his wife on the other hand was a crazy money spender. They owed lots of money to the credit card company His friend Stephanie liked high class expensive jewelry. Al was a drug addict and stole drugs from dealers. Julia was in the intelligence division.

A plan was hatched to raid the mafia drug base where they found this bag of money on the table, and arrested a couple of bad guys. He started getting these phone calls one after another from the bill collectors calling every single day. They needed money desperately. What were they to do for money? He asked Julia and Al if they wanted to make some money, and they could make 5 million dollars apiece. They said, "What's the plan?"

Shawn, Al, Julia and Stephanie all agreed to this plan to raid the drug house with masks, take money and leave. But someone started shooting at us. During the shootout, we killed 3 drug dealers. We ran with the money. Internal Affairs found out about our heist. Al killed himself over drugs, Stephanie ran away to Japan. Shawn was still out there somewhere in a foreign country.

Julia got caught and here she is 20 years later stuck in prison with nothing to do but wait for each day to go by. She grows old and waits to be released out of prison. Who knows what happened to the last surviving member who is not in prison. Stephanie is still in fear that her friend Al killed himself over drugs and she witnessed it; Julia is still in prison and has not gone crazy. After 20 years have gone by, she still wonders if it was a good idea to kill those 3 drug dealers.
