Creative Names for Teams

A creative team name can encourage fun and comradeship within the team; be it for high school, college, local club or neighborhood. A team name helps team bonding and team building; it instills feelings of unity among team members. Are you looking for creative names for your baseball team; how do you find ‘More Than One Angry Mongoose’ or ‘Wii Not Hit’? The suggestions make you chuckle, no doubt. These are some of the funny options. Ideally a team name should not be more than two or three words long. When devising the team name, remember that you will be showing it off on your jersey for a couple of seasons at least. The team name you decide upon should sound plausible. Also, when choosing, be sensitive to other cultures and world events. Don’t use phrases or words that might hurt other people or their sentiments.

In order for the team image to be immortalized in its name, it should be catchy to the ear, stay long in the memory of the people, original and easy to remember. You might say that is easier said than done; but it’s not so tough. The process of choosing a creative team name may look difficult, but it is not an unachievable task.

The best way to go about it is to figure out a few things right at the beginning. The whole task can become easy if you know what image you want your team to project. So, take a pen and paper and start jotting down. Pointers like what your team is about, place of origin, team players and the image or purpose you want to project can make the task easy. Search for things or features that are common between the team members. Pinpoint the purpose of your team, if it’s sports then is it football, baseball, hockey, basketball, etc. You can use something related to your game in your team name.

A common family name among the players/team members or the geographical region can be paired with a rhyming adjective to get a creative name for your team. You can also choose the name of an animal whose characteristics match with that of the team. What about natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes? Editing the various options may be infuriating, but don’t lose heart. You are looking for the most creative name for your team, just keep on with it… jot down all the options on a piece of paper.

Alternatively, use of puns and adjectives are also allowed. Make a separate list of puns and adjectives that you think will describe your team. Then choose the one that you think is the ideal one... by that I mean, the one that projects your team image. In case of adjectives, you can even play pairing two to get a good team name. Or you can add the region you belong to before say hurricane and you might have a creative name for your team. If your team is new, you could try something like ‘Roaring Rookies’.

You can choose rhyming words or words that have a double meaning but focusing on a common quality in the team members can help you get a distinctive, witty and original team name. Play on the words or pick words that start with the same alphabet like 'California Chipmunks' or 'South Dakota Speedsters'. That might do the trick!

You can look up synonyms of words. Creativity means being inventive; so don’t leave out any options. Don’t forget to check out language resources. Look up wikipedia and thesaurus to find meaningful words or check out English idioms and sayings or the urban dictionary; you might even find a clue there. Other search options could be mythology, history or cultural information.

Falling in with the popular trend can also help. In the 1960s cartoon characters were widely used. In the following decade, geographical names were considered taboo while trivia names were popular. In the 1980s, amusing names were the pick of the day. In the present decade, the trend is towards the intimidating. What would you think of ‘Braindead Zombie Protestant Fundamentalist Backlash’ - this name was submitted by a high school team but I don’t think the articulation was allowed to be taken up.

Whatever the means, remember to involve all your team members in the exercise. Rest assured, this will get you better results.
