Creating a Safe Work Environment

Organizations which care for their employees by providing them with safe working conditions, reap the benefits by way of increased productivity and profits. Scroll down to know the various measures that organizations should take to create a safe work environment...
A safe work environment benefits all employers as they don't have to deal with any resultant legal issues arising out of putting their employee's life in jeopardy. Moreover, if the employees feel safe working in an organization, their productivity will automatically increase, leading to profit-maximization and achieving of all the preset organizational goals. Looking at these positives, organizations today should strive for creating and maintaining a safe work environment.

Develop Safety Programs and Policies
First and foremost, there should be a safety program in place, which lists all the potential hazards and threats that employees face in any given organization. Along with the hazards, there should be ways and procedures suggested to overcome them. For instance, in a manufacturing unit, where the employees might be facing a potential threat of coming in contact with chemicals, such safety policies should be made which make it compulsory for the workers to wear protective equipment such as glover, goggles, helmet, etc. made available at the unit by the employers, before undertaking any work.

Train the Staff and Management
For providing a safe work environment to the employees, it is very important that after the safety program and policies have been framed, the employees are made aware of the same. The employees should know of all the potential threats they have while working in the organization. They should be trained to take care of these as well as on how to meet emergencies such as natural disasters, fires, etc. For instance, in big hotels, one of the first trainings that is provided to the staff upon joining is on the steps to take in case there is fire. Since in a hotel, the potential for a fire flare-up emerging from the kitchen is high, the employees as well as the management is trained on the same. Ideally, training the employees on workplace safety should be a regular feature. Ten to fifteen minutes devoted to the same, every week, is what is required, to update and train the employees on safety issues.

Bring Policies into Practice
For creating a safe and healthy work environment, there are some policies that all organizations should ensure are in place. A first aid kit is a must-have in any organization. Next comes the electrical wiring, which should be in accordance to the standards so that there are no short circuits, fires or other hazardous things caused by it. If it's a manufacturing unit, the employer should see to it that the machines and equipment on which the workers do their job, is regularly serviced and that it has not become obsolete.

Work safety has a lot to do with the behavior of the employees as well. There should be clear behavioral expectations from them, which the employees should be made aware of on joining the organization. If any deviance in behavior is observed, it should be dealt with at the earliest. If the employees create disputes and behave in a manner which endangers the safety of other employees and customers, strict action should be taken against them to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

Inspect the Workplace and Update Safety Procedures
Prevention is always better than cure! That's why, employers should stay one step ahead by trying to avoid any kind of mishap, rather than dealing with one that has already taken place. For this, there should be a safety manager appointed, who inspects the workplace, employees and other probable unsafe conditions, from time to time. If he spots any discrepancies in the procedures and safety regulations laid down in the safety program, he should report them immediately. Next, steps should be taken to make good these diversions from the laid down rules and regulations. Also, it is not rare for a workplace to experience some new safety issues. So, if during inspections, such issues crop up, they should be incorporated in the safety programs and subsequently employees should be trained to deal with the same.

Involve the Employees
To maintain a safe work environment, involving the employees in the safety program is a good idea. Many organizations today have formed safety committees and made their employees part of it. The benefit of forming such committees is that employees can freely communicate with their supervisors or co-workers about any safety issue.

For creating and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, appreciating, recognizing and rewarding the employees, who exhibit model behavior and who follow the safety procedures to the tee, is a much better strategy than blaming and punishing the employees. To ensure that the employees follow the safety procedures, positive re-enforcements are the tools that all organizations should rely on.
