Chapter One
Cassidy's point of view
I woke up to the blaring of my alarm clock. I sighed and slid out of bed and flicked on the light. I opened the closet, staring into it, trying to find something to wear. I finally chose a black pair of skinny jeans and a white baby doll top with some sort of design on the front.
I grabbed a pair of flip flops and stuck them on my feet before trudging down the hall to Alyss' room. She was sitting on her floor singing softly to herself while pulling on her sneaker. "Hey Alyss." I smiled down at her.
She glanced up at me grinning. "Hey Cass. Have you seen my backpack? I can't remember where I put it."
"Next to couch." I told her. She pushed herself up off the floor, done with her shoes. "Kay. Thanks." She walked out of the room. I followed her to the kitchen. She went to the living room, but I stayed in the kitchen.
"Good morning mom." I said, sitting down to the bowl of oatmeal with little apple pieces she had put at the table. "Mmm! It smells good!" I started eating. My phone buzzed. I flipped it open. A text from James, my boyfriend.
Good morning beautiful. :) I dreamed about you last night.
I smiled and replied, texting quickly, good morning! :) I dreamed about polar bears. A few seconds later, my phone started ringing. I gulped down the last bit of oatmeal and answered the phone, walking back to my room as I answered it.
"Hey James!"
"What do you mean you dreamed about polar bears!" He said in a teasingly sad voice.
I laughed. "I guess polar bears are more important to me than you are James."
"That is totally lame." He laughed. I could hear him grinning as he said, "See you on the bus?"
"Of course." I replied, smiling. I looked at myself in the full length mirror, examining my outfit again. After a couple of seconds, I decided to change. Still talking about random things on the phone with James, I quickly changed. It was going to be hot today, I could already tell from the heat bursting through my closed window, and I didn't want to boil in my skinny jeans.
I changed into a mid thigh length jean miniskirt, with the same baby doll top as before. I brushed out my hair, and turned on my in-styler.
Still talking to him, I carefully curled my hair into light waves, but straightening my bangs. I did my make up one handed too and finally said goodbye when mom came to my room and told me to hurry up.
After pausing, again, to check myself in the mirror, I decided to add a necklace, a cute small heart on a gold plated chain that James had given me almost a year ago when we first started dating.
My phone rang on my way out the door, but this time it wasn't James. Instead it was my best friend Coral. She was shrieking about something. "Coral, calm down. I can't understand you when you're freaking out like that!" I said goodbye to mom, covering the phone with my hand and walked out the door and down the street to the bus stop.
A few other kids were there, but none of my close friends. I saw Coral walking down the street towards me, still talking on the phone, still freaking out. I waited for her to finally calm down, which by that time, she was next to me and sliding her phone back into her pocket.
"Cass-this-is-awful-it's-a-complete-tragedy-it's-horrible-and-rotten-and-I-don't- really-want-to-tell-you-but-if-I-don't-I'll-be-the-worlds-worst-best-friend-ever-but-I-don't- really-want-to-have-to-be-the-one-to-tell-you-this!" She said it all in one breath.
"Coral, just tell me." I said, starting to be nervous. "Whatever it is, just tell me!" Someone came up behind me and covered my eyes with their hands. "Guess who." The person said. A familiar, husky voice. I smiled. "Hmm... James!"
He laughed and turned me around to kiss me. Coral sighed impatiently behind me, but I decided she could tell me later. "So how was your party Saturday night?" I asked James. He grinned. "It was awesome!" The bus ride, school and the bus ride home was a blur. The only thing that stuck out at me was that there was going to be a new kid in my homeroom tomorrow.
It wasn't until we started walking home, that I finally remembered that Coral had wanted to tell me something earlier. "Hey, Coral, what were you talking about this morning?"
She sighed. "Um..."
Again, she was interrupted. This time, by James' older brother David. He was running towards us. He slowed as he got closer, and stopped just in front of us. "Hey Cass, James is cheating you."
I froze. "What?"
He looked at me, compassion and sadness written all over his face. "Saturday night, our parents were out of town... they actually won't be back until tomorrow night, but anyway, we had a party. Or James had a party. He invited half the school."
"Yeah, I know. I couldn't go because mom wouldn't let me."
"Yeah, well, you know Brittany Melder right?"
I almost stopped breathing. "Yeah. We used to be friends, back in third grade."
"Well, halfway through the party, Brittany and James went up to his room. I think I can spare you the details of what happened by just saying that I walked in at a horrible moment, to grab some more beer, we had extra in his room, hidden in his closet from mom and dad."
I looked at Coral. She glanced at David, then the ground, then finally at me. "I was going to tell you that. I heard it from Jess, who heard from Jenna, who heard it from Meaghan, who heard it from Tiffany, who is on the cheerleading squad with Brittany."
"This isn't the first time he's cheated on you either." David said sadly. "I didn't tell you before because I convinced myself it was none of my business, but I had to tell you."
I turned away from them and sprinted towards my house. I ran inside, up to my room, slammed the door behind me and flopped onto my bed, tears streaming down my face. Mom rushed after me. "Sweetie, what's wrong? What happened?"
"Nothing mom. Just go away!" I sobbed. She hovered over me for a few seconds more, but finally turned away and left. I heard her go into the kitchen and a few minutes later she was back with a cup of milk and a plate of cookies. She set them on the nightstand beside me bed. After she left, I got up, still crying and started pulling his pictures from off the wall. I piled pictures of him, pictures he'd drawn for me, cards he'd written me, letters he'd written and all the jewelry and things he had given me into a box. I shoved it under my bed, tears still falling down my face, before I lay back on the bed, crying like I'd never stop.
