Cough is the natural response of body, that helps in elimination of foreign particles present inside the body or particles causing irritation to throat. What is a Cough Suppressant?

This suppressant relieves from cough symptoms and prevent recurrence of cough. They are drugs that are effective for treating cough and cough related symptoms. Aso known as antitussives, they are effective in treating dry coughs, which is not associated with ejection of phlegm.

They is known to act on the center of the brain, thereby controlling cough reflex. There are many chemical combinations of drugs available over the counter, that have shown positive results in suppressing dry hacking coughs and eliminating other associated symptoms, like sore throat, cold and flu.

These suppressants normally contain, Dextromethorphan, an effective drug that abates cough in adults and other respiratory infections. Codeine also shows similar effects, but is comparatively stronger.

Adults
There are plenty of cough suppressants available in drug houses, that come in the form of lozenge, syrups and pills. They have various drug combinations that help suppress cough.

Children
Doctors generally say that children below six years of age should not be administered with cough suppressants and other cough syrups, unless it is very much-needed. In case the cough is disturbing at night and hampers with sleep, you can give your child mild doses as prescribed by the doctor. Few medicines can cause drowsiness in children so care needs to be taken while administering these medicines.

Natural Cough Suppressant

Honey is considered to be the best cough suppressant, showing miraculous effects. A home remedy is much more effective than any other chemical drugs. These can be prepared easily at home and with adequate dosage they show similar effects.

Honey - Lemon
A tablespoon of honey mixed with warm lemon juice is a very good cough suppressant. If you are having regular cough, mix honey with few crushed leaves of tulsi. Honey blended with decaffeinated herbal tea, is a very effective remedy to suppress cough. Raw onion juice mixed with honey is also a very good suppressant.

Ginger - Pepper
Grind ginger and boil the juice. Mix a pinch of back pepper. Sip it warm before going to sleep.

Marjoram - Water
Boil one cup of water along with one teaspoon of marjoram. Let it stand for 10 to 15 minutes and then drink it.

Almond - Sugar
Soak few almonds in water, overnight. Peel it off and make a paste with butter and sugar. Consume this everyday to get rid of cough.

Lemon - Turmeric
Grind raw turmeric and mix with lemon juice. Take 2 tablespoons of this paste everyday to suppress cough.

Elecampane - Lemon
Soak the roots and leaves of Elecampane plant in honey and lemon juice for a few days. Take 2 tablespoons every day to get rid of dry cough.

Gargle and Inhale
To reduce dry and hacking cough, gargle with boiled water mixed with one tablespoon of salt. The other combination is basil oil and ginger juice. You can also boil few mint leaves and start taking the vapor. This can also relieve you from throat infections.

A cough suppressant always works for dry cough. If your cough persists, accompanied by ejection of phlegm and mucus, you must always get diagnosed by doctor to know the underlying reason.
