Cotton Gin Invention

Cotton gin is a mechanical device intended to simplify the task of separating the cotton seeds from cotton fiber. Before this machine came into the picture, the task was carried out by hands which made it difficult and time-consuming. The introduction of cotton gin in the 17th century proved to be a major boost not just for the cotton industry, but also for the economy the United States. Cotton became one of the major cash crops in the country, giving a tough competition to the two other flourishing cash crops - tobacco and indigo.

Invention of the Cotton Gin

Cotton gin had its own advantages and disadvantages for the United States as well as the world. However, one cannot deny the fact that this invention gave a major boost to the economy of the United States. One of the major achievements of the industrial revolution, cotton gin proved to be a milestone in development of the US economy.

Cotton gin was invented by the American inventor Eli Whitney. Born on 8th December, 1765, in Massachusetts, Whitney developed the cotton gin in order to facilitate mass production of cotton. Other than the cotton gin, Whitney also invented a technique to manufacture muskets by means of machine. Even though he is widely known for the invention of the cotton gin, Whitney actually made a fortune as a manufacturer of muskets with interchangeable parts.

After perfecting his crude model of the cotton gin in 1793, Whitney got it patented by March 1794. Introduction of cotton gin in the United States made the northern regions of the nation flourish as industrial centers, and the southern regions flourish as cotton producers. Even regions like Texas, which didn't indulge, initially, in production of cotton, took to cotton farming with full zest. The result was excessive production of cotton in the United States, which gave a major blow to other cotton producing countries like India and Egypt.

Even though the cotton industry in the United States was flourishing, the farmers, indulging in cotton production, were not quite happy with the royalty they had to pay for using Whitney's invention. This in turn made them come up with their own variants of cotton gin, which was not quite difficult owing to the simple design of the machine. Although, Whitney had his invention patented, the loopholes in the patent made it possible for other people to come up with their own versions of cotton gin, claiming that they were their 'own' original versions. In 1807, when the patent expired, the Congress refused to renew the patent, thus opening the door of cotton gin manufacturing to everyone.

Increasing demand of raw material for flourishing cotton industry didn't just hamper the economy of other cotton producing nations, but also led to some other iniquities. Critics argue that it proved to be a major factor in perpetuation of slavery, which only came to an end with Civil War.

Undoubtedly one of the most important inventions of industrial revolution, cotton gin revolutionized the way people thought of the production of cotton in the United States. Today, the cotton industry in the United States has a significant share in the international market, something which perhaps would not have been possible sans the invention of cotton gin in the 17th century.
