Corner Bookcases are Great Places for Cat Beds

If you own multiple cats you might agree with me that they are often hard to manage. My girlfriend and I have about five cats and they were always lounging around in random places in our home and we would always step on them in the darkness if we got up to go to the bathroom or something. It also tended to look really messy when they decided to just fall asleep wherever they wanted to. We changed all that recently though and I want to share how we did it with the internet. To simplify it in one word: corner bookcase.

We got the idea from a friend of ours who also has a group of cats in his home. He told us that you could buy a cheap corner bookcase at Ikea or some other department store that sells furniture and you could outfit it with cat beds and cat tree accessories and it would be less expensive than actually going out and buying one of those crazy gigantic cat jungle gyms.

The one he’s built for himself in his house is an astounding six foot high corner bookcase with five shelves. Each of them has a personal bed for each of his cats and he’s labeled each shelf with the cat’s name. He’s also made sure to get a wide enough corner bookcase so that he can drill big holes into the shelves next to the cat beds so that the cats can easily move to their beds. It’s like a huge tiered cat bunk bed now!

My girlfriend and I just thought that was so cool so we decided to build one of our own. It was actually pretty easy. We went and bought a pretty big corner bookcase from Ikea and decided that we were going to put it in the corner of our bedroom.

We made sure to find one that would fit the confines of our room and then we took the assembly required pieces home to go to work on. Before we put together all of the pieces we figured out which pieces of wood were the shelves and we cut out big chunks of them (not enough to destroy the integrity of the shelf) so that the cat could fit through. Once we had all of the pieces cut out we put the corner bookcase together and set out some of those oval cat beds for our cats.

The only tough part about the whole process was training the cats to climb all the way up to their individual beds. We found that they would often just go to the first bed they came to and sleep all crowded on top of each other. What we did was basically every half an hour or so we would pick up a cat and place them in the bed we wanted them to sleep in. After a while they began to realize that was their bed and would go there on their own.
