Copywriter may be a familiar word for most people. But many might not be aware of what a copywriter actually does for a living. The words or texts which you find various advertisements, brochures for promoting a business, and other public relations outlets, are the ones which are brought into picture by people who are known as copywriters. Advertising agencies attribute a written script as a copy. And, as an obvious fact, a person who is responsible for creating such copies is designated as a copywriter. The job does not encompass only advertisements in magazines and newspapers. It is also a vital part of television commercials and radio ads.

Responsibilities

So, apart from what I have mentioned above, a copywriter also works on creating words for coupons, web content, jingle lyrics and taglines. Also, texts for slogans, flyers, billboards advertising, press releases and catalogs are among the areas of expertise of a copywriter. If you have ever received any requests for fundraising or direct mail packages, then these requests are also generated by a copywriter.

Earlier, the job of a copywriter had limited amount of scope and exposure. Copywriting was somewhat like mundane chores like rewriting weather reports or newswire stories. However, with years of improvisation and new talent brimming in the commercial market, this designation can no longer be considered as, less important than that of a web developer or an IT technician. Another important role of a copywriter involves writing text of business to business advertising materials. Also, the ads which pharmaceutical companies develop to gain attention of doctors are written by a copywriter.

Portfolio and Salary

Candidates who are considered fit for the job of a copywriter are ones with a good command over the English language or those who are related to a journalism background. Creativity, quality to think out of the box even under pressure, and a zest to create something new every time, are considered the prime bulwarks to this profession. It is all about advertising the image of a product and enhancing it with a touch of language.

Success comes easily when a whole team is involved to nurture it. Likewise, a copywriter does not work alone. He/she remains in close association with clients and other creative team members to generate ideas that would work. Speaking of the salary, to put in an average figure it is about $60,000 annually. However, it is obvious that the range may vary from company to company.
