One of the most widely publicized features of TV sets is the contrast ratio for LCD TVs. This ratio determines the difference between the darkest black and the brightest white, and this plays a major factor in image clarity and image detail.

The field of consumer electronics has progressed a lot over the years, and LCD TVs and plasma TVs are everyone's choice of television sets today. These TV sets do not come cheap and they cost a lot of money, so people expect nothing but the best performance and video quality from them. The contrast ratio for LCD TV determines how the different colors on the screen would look against each other, and the overall quality of the screen is heavily dependent on this factor.

The contrast ratio is a setting that has been around in TV sets since the time color TVs were introduced in the market. HDTVs have taken this concept to a whole new level, and one is able to see the brightest colors on screen with crystal clear clarity. The contrast ratio determines the ability of the TV set to display the brightest colors on the screen and the darkest colors on the screen, at the same time. How these colors look in contrast and in relativity to each other is determined by the contrast ratio for LCD TV.
Different manufacturers take different approaches to declaring their contrast ratio for LCD TV, and this heavily depends on the room conditions and the lighting conditions in the room where the TV is going to be viewed. The ideal contrast ratios for LCD TVs are measured in ideally lighted rooms where the light from the TV does not get reflected at all, and all the light emitted by the TV gets completely absorbed in the room. When the manufacturers of LCD TVs talk about dynamic contrast ratio for LCD TV (or ideal contrast ratio), they are talking about the conditions of an ideal room as mentioned above. On the other hand, static contrast ratio for LCD TVs talks about the contrast ratio by taking the fluctuating room conditions into consideration as well. This is also known as the Ansi contrast.
Different LCD TVs available in the market will have different contrast ratios and this makes a major difference in the quality of the picture. A higher contrast ratio does not necessarily mean a better picture quality, as the brightest and darkest elements in any LCD TV are different from one another.
Contrast ratio for LCD TVs are getting bigger and bigger, but what does this really mean. It's not uncommon to see contrast ratios of 150,000 : 1 for LCD TVs nowadays. Plasma TVs have not held back in this regard either, their contrast ratios can even go up to 3,000,000 : 1. In spite of these large numbers, you must remember that a higher contrast ratio still does not translate into better picture quality. Some manufacturers simply try to fool their customers by claiming high contrast ratios without carrying out a proper test on them, and without differentiating between dynamic contrast and static contrast. This leaves gullible and ignorant customers in the clutches of highly claimed contrast ratio for LCD TVs.
Contrast ratios are very important features for pleasurable viewing, and it enhances image brightness and image detail considerably as well. TV sets with very low contrast ratios would show an inferior picture quality, as the blacks and whites would appear similar in appearance. When you are buying a TV, you should pay close attention to the contrast ratio for LCD TVs, both static and dynamic.
