They find application in vision correction (as substitutes to spectacles), changing of appearance (cosmetic) and for therapeutic purposes, too. In the latter case, eye doctors use special contact lenses to correct certain eye disorders. Therapeutic contact lenses can also protect the eye after surgical procedures. While some kinds of contact lenses have a long lifespan, others varieties are disposable. The user replaces the disposable kind after a single use. With proper use, long-term contact lenses can last many months.

Probably one of the greatest advantages to using contact lenses is the fact that they can radically change the appearance of one's eyes. Since the user wears them in direct contact with the eyes, tinted or colored contact lenses can change one's eye color and bring about a considerable personality change. One can use colored contact lenses to change one's eye color to blue, green, hazel, violet, honey, brown, amethyst, turquoise, gray and many intermediate shades. While the color change is only temporary, it is certainly dramatic. This makes colored contact lenses, with or without vision-correction features, very useful in filmmaking, modeling, professional photography and many areas of social life.

When contact lenses first came on the market, they were very expensive novelties that only a few could afford. As research and development advanced manufacturing techniques and caused competition, they became more affordable. As a result, almost anyone can buy contact lenses today. Discounted soft contact lenses are available for every purpose. Discounted contact lenses are as effective in altering appearance and correction vision defects as the costlier varieties.
